Pottery Chile Sketches Music

 We made it on Saturday for green chile, lunch at Jimmy John's, the Empty Bowl and a long day.

The University of New Mexico Alumni had a New Mexico green chile sale for charity.  Pick up was at a park.  We timed it to get there, pick up the chile and then have a sandwich at Jimmy John's before the Empty Bowl event.  

We got the chile and iced it down.  Jimmy John's has the best bread for our taste.  I can't eat the bread anymore so I have a lettuce wrap.  Pretty good as "sandwiches" go now. 

The Empty Bowl show was super.  You get a bowl with your ticket and they have auction items.  Libby Koch was the first performer.  She is so personable and has the most beautiful voice and writes great songs.  Hardened and Tempered followed with their ballads of hard and good times.  Suzanna Choffel closed the music with her interesting voice and good songs.  We thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.  We got to see some friends including Spring and Ellie.  We know Spring via Joanna and music and Ellie via Joanna and baseball and music, too.

I did some quick horrible sketches but I will post them just 'cause.  Hard to sketch at concerts for me.  You will see these don't look much like the singers when you see their pages.  I also didn't take photos ???

#15 curtain - sub the stained glass window behind the singers, the windows were beautiful and so many colors.  Yellow and purple were dominant.

I picked this flat bowl for soup, it is heavier than the plate!  Made by SAG on the bottom.  We have many bowls so I chose the little pitcher for painting or syrup when we have pancakes or waffles.  I usually make syrup.  The plate was so pretty, it was made by Sunset Canyon Pottery.  I "won" it in the auction.   I think they help with the firing of the bowls made by other artists.  The pitcher didn't have any signature.  All three pieces go well together which I hadn't noticed.  Spring is very instrumental in getting the Empty Bowl together.  She made a plate in a fish shape that said "Just for the halibut".  I say that a lot.  It had lots of bids so I just bid on the round plate.  

The Empty Bowl Summer Concert was held at Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, 2200 Justin Lane, Austin, TX 78757.  They donate the space, very gracious and helpful.

We left the house about 1015 am and got back about 630 so no more activity.

Sunday morning we got up and peeled and cleaned the chile.  The Alumni bought the chile through the Central Market and it was roasted that morning.  They overdid the chile a bit and the skin was pretty carbonized.  We mostly just wiped the burned peel off and took out the seeds.  Then I had to wash it to get more of the black off.  Then I stopped and we had breakfast/brunch with the green chile, eggs, sausage, potatoes and homemade tortillas for Gene and HEB Homestyle corn tortillas for me.  Yummy.

I chopped the chile for brunch in the kitchen machine, so I just went ahead and chopped the rest and bagged it and put it in the freezer.  We bought 10 pounds of hot and 10 pounds of mild.  They did not offer medium.  I mixed the hot and mild as I packed it.  At the end I had 3 packs of hot left .. guess I didn't guess too well in the mixed ones.  It is nice to have frozen green chile compared to eating the green chile in the jars.  Maybe the hard work makes it taste better.  It was several hours peeling, cleaning and bagging.  Whew!!

Shadow Side

Shadow was on the list.  I had this pine cone on my desk, I think one of the great grandkids brought it in to me from the yard for a gift.  It does make an interesting shadow from my desk lamp.

Pastel Day and Watercolor Sketch. What?

 The Austin Pastel Society had their monthly meeting here in Bastrop on Sunday.  It was live and in person.  They also put some of it on Zoom and if you have facebook and are a member you can see more on the facebook page.  Info on the website at https://www.austinpastelsociety.org/page/32253/aps-demonstrations

It was so wonderful to get together with other artists.  I got to see old friends and meet some new artists and art supporters as well.  The painting artists were Suzanne Malesovas,  Joycelyn Schedler, Julia Fletcher, Neva Rossi-Smoll and Alan Ehrlich.  Each painted in their own styles.  They finished a painting in an hour.

I was slightly disappointed that in past years the paint around had the five artists starting a painting, then after 10 minutes move to the next painting for 10 minutes and ending back at the painting they started to "finish and clean up" what the other artists did.  I missed the excitement of that format.

It was interesting to see the artists and watch their techniques and different use of pastels and surfaces.  I can always learn something new.  It definitely makes me want to get out and paint with other artists.

It was a warm afternoon, but so nice in the shade with plenty of room to walk around and get a good view.

There was a silent auction of the paintings to support the APS scholarship fund.  I bid on Joycelyn's painting, the middle photo.  I "won" it as they say.  It is fun to have original paintings by an artist/friend.

Thanks to the APS crew that put the day together. Volunteers deserve awards.   I have missed the social side of art.  And a good time was had by all......

Today started as a nice fall day in Bastrop.  It was 58 degrees F.  (Of course it will be about 90 degrees later.)  I sketched on the porch with watercolors.

I sketched with a pencil, added watercolor and then the ink.  I prefer sketching freehand with the ink first.  This was an experiment.  I was not going to ad ink, but I like watercolor and ink sketches so just had to add the ink.

Uvalde Charity Event

The Lost Pines Art Center and Art League in conjunction with Central Texas Cares is hosting a concert to benefit the Robb Elementary Memorial Fund in Uvalde, Texas.  There will be a silent auction, food and fun.

Sunday, July 17, 12:00 noon to 9:00 p.m.

Culture Sketch, Joanna Fest of Course.

A new Hunt is underway.  They turn around fast these days.  Culture was on the list.  I was thinking opera and remembering that we had some old opera glasses from Disneyland or some place in the old days.  Gene said, "I have some weird glasses that might be good for opera glasses."  Sure enough he has some binocular glasses that would be perfect for the opera.  I might try them for baseball as well.

Number 1, culture - Gene's sort of opera glasses done on my iPad with the Apple pencil and the app Brushes.  As quick as I can on digital which takes longer than actual sketching.  As few undos as possible so I keep the sketchy look.

They are light weight plastic and feel pretty weird when you have them on.  

Joanna Fest was a great day.  Amazing all the love and friendship and wonderful music on Sunday.  The weather was perfect and so was the whole day.  Raised $3,000 for HAMM, the insurance for musicians in Austin.

Joanna is a Saint and Sketch

You may know that Joanna, our oldest daughter is a Saint.  She takes care of us, baseball buddies, professors, musicians and many other friends.  Many of us are up in age and she patiently puts up with us.  She volunteers at The Bugle Boy in La Grange.   She is tech support and more.

She has been supporting live music for many years.  When Covid started she began watching all the Zoom shows by her musician friends and buying more T-shirts, CDs and other merchandise since she couldn't see them live and in person.  If you recall we were supposed to be in lock down for a couple of weeks.  She decided to wear a different T-shirt from her musician friends every day.  As of January 27, 2022, she had worn 372 different shirts.  At the live shows she helps sell merchandise, pass the tip jar and whatever she can to help.

Some of the musicians got together and decided to do something for Joanna.  They made a T-shirt for her.  They knew she wouldn't take anything so they made it a fund raiser for HAAM, health insurance for Austin musicians.  So very cool.

After that they decided to do a show in her honor as well.  Y'all can get a T-shirt (link below) and come to the show as well:

Y’all know about my quaran-t-shirt project, right? A few weeks ago, my pals Miranda Dawn, Chris Hawkes, Erin Ivey, Cam Rogers, and Nicolette Good were talking about it and thought it would be fun if there was a Joanna t-shirt. They recruited Ellie Hammack to work on the design and were going to surprise me with it. I don’t know the specifics of the surprise—I just know they were going to surprise me. They set up a campaign via Fine Southern Gentlemen to print the t-shirt and donate the proceeds to HAAM! A friend of mine saw the design and forwarded the link to me with a “Wow!” comment—having no idea it was supposed to be a surprise. So, now I know and the surprise is over. But, I’m totally blown away by their thoughtfulness AND the fact that they wanted to donate the proceeds to HAAM! And, the design is very cool. It totally made me laugh. So many details. Wow! Ellie said there were many discussions of whether or not my hair should be in a braid or down, etc. Ha! Anyway, I’m amazed and humbled and have been smiling so much since I found out about it. Reveal Heart Gallery

Flame Hunt 615 Sketch and OYOU

Is that a real flame?  It looks real and I sketched it from life so to me it is real.

Number 9 flame - the electric fireplace flame.  Various pens and some inktense pencils, at home, freehand.

Gene and I were watching a Hallmark Christmas movie after a snack.  We need to move about so we are going to the store and get a burger later.  He is working on the front steps as I speak.  The original steps were made from untreated lumber and were rotting away.  A good project for Gene who likes to stay busy.  I'm surprised he watched the movie with me.  He either goes to sleep or goes to work!

This cup makes me smile.  It was in my Christmas stocking (thanks to Joanna because she wants a surprise for me since I know what is in all the stockings.).  It looks like an old fashioned tin cup but is ceramic.  Nice.

OYOU is a great organization that we picked for our charity this year.  We draw names and give the bulk of our gift money to an adopted family and OYOU was our family for this year.  Interesting that Joanna had already bought the cup before we decided.  Terri Hendrix, singer songwriter, started the charity.  It is for kids of all ages in the arts.

Southwest Watercolor & Mistletoe Jam

For the Southwest Western November Challenge on wetcanvas I chose Sheila's photo of a prairie rain shower.  I was in a rainy mood I guess as I chose a similar photo for the Pan Pastel class the other day.

I used a piece of watercolor paper given to me by Mary Curtis one of the pastel artists from the Austin Pastel Society.  This is a good memory as Mary passed away a couple of years ago.  It is good paper, but I'm not sure what kind it is as it was in big sheets and I cut this one for Mary, my niece,  and and I to use.

The blending and washes work so much better on good paper.  That is always a good thing.  It makes for better finishes on paintings of any kind to use the best equipment that you can afford.  Practice results are better and learning is easier.

Inktober Catch Up and Sketch

Luckily the Inktober prompt, tasty,  and the Scavenger Hunt prompt, apple, could be combined to one sketch again.  Lucky me!  It helped me catch up after missing yesterday's sketch.

I sketched in the big book and both sketches are on one page.  I used Sharpies which may not technically be ink, but since you can't change it, I'm calling it ink.  The Sharpie company does separate markers and pens ......but.......  I bet they have the same ink.  https://www.sharpie.com/

I don't use Sharpies very often because they soak through paper making the backside not usable for another sketch.  In the big book I'm using both sides of the page ... well, not today.

The backside of the paper left a ghost that is pretty identifiable, don't you think?

Here is the items I used for ancient in the previous post.  I thought the basket was made that way, but after a good look, it seems the weight of the pottery pushed it over.  It is perfect now to view the shreds of pottery.  The jug from Peru was black originally and is now a dirty black.  The tool or weapon was broken in the fire, too.

I took the day off yesterday, yet again.  I went to a luncheon with the theme, "Inspire, Empower, and Thrive:  Our Stories.  It was presented by the Family Crisis Center here in Bastrop.  The event coincides with Domestic Violence and Awareness Month.   It was informative and  fun to see people I knew and have a good lunch catered by John Chabot.  (Great Chef)  Gene and I were volunteers at the Center for several years and had a great time helping with their fund raisers.  You can put a search up in the left search bar for my blog and see the things we bought and donated.  Our current Christmas tree is from one of the Festival of Trees after the fire.

Music, Music, Music!

The 9th Annual Mistletoe Jam is on for December 1 at Threadgil's North in Austin.  What a lineup!  George Ensle is amazing as are the others.  The musicians donate their time.  Fun, fun, fun.

Bird and Street are wonderful for hosting this fundraiser for the Heart Gallery, helping older children to find a forever home.  Hope you can either go or donate.  We always support this event.

I sketched in the big coffee table book with a Prismacolor 01 fine line marker/pen.  I take photos of the big book and the fine line of an 01 doesn't show as well.  Hard to get the background white without losing some of the lines.  The book is too big for my scanner without breaking the spine of the book.

Lost in Lines and Mistletoe Jam

As you know, I sketch freehand and quickly.  An item on Hunt 521  http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1438231  was ceiling-scape.  We have the layered ceilings in our house so I picked the dining area.  I'm not good with lines and perspective so I did put a few pencil marks to keep me going.

Number 11 or some such - ceiling scape, in the dining area.  There is the flat ceiling, a drop down, flat and another drop down and flat.  Lovely shadows but hard to show in black and white ink.

Sunday evening we went to the Mistletoe Jam.  It is an annual event we sponsor.  Byrd and Street organize it.  The musicians donate their time and the show is super special.  Our Austin kiddos and Elaine, a friend that repairs musical instruments, went with us.  It is at Threadgills South so we eat, visit, and enjoy the music.

The Partnerships for Children benefit from the donations.  They assist the foster care system and help with older children and special needs children to be adopted.  You can read about it and maybe attend one of their events or make a donation.    https://partnershipsforchildren.org/  They are a fine bunch of folks.

iMac Sketch, Pastel Painting .. Again

I was  procrastinating, as usual, about sketching.  I was out on the porch with Gene.   I didn't want to have to go get anything to sketch.  I came to the computer to read our family messaging and saw the batteries on my desk.  I decided to sketch them right on my iMac and not have to go anywhere or get anything!  Yay!

I have Sketchbook Pro on my iMac, but only have a regular mouse.  Not easy to draw with, but I like the challenge sometimes.

Get With It, Stop Procrastinating

As Susan Gibson sang about last night in a song she said should be called "Word to Self" .  I'm pretty sure she hasn't recorded it but you can check out her music at http://www.susangibson.com/  She performs about five times a week, if you get a chance to see her ...  go see her.  She is a great story teller, guitarist and singer.  It was a great show.  She is having a free show in Luchenbach today!

Anyway the song is about just doing what you set out to do.  Which is the point of my post.  I have been in SUPER procrastination mode.  I think it is close to depression.  You know you have things to do and you still turn on the TV.  Sometimes we feel overwhelmed and the best thing is just to start one thing.

Raffle Winner Announced

You won't be surprised that I didn't take any photos at the Bastrop Fine Arts Guild Gala/Artful Afternoon will you?  I have a one track mind in my old age.  I was intent on selling raffle tickets!

We had a friend take a phone photo as we left.

"T" and I as we were leaving.  I had to push my hat back, I couldn't see anyone taller than me when I was talking to them.  I do not like wearing hats!

I bought two "garden" hats at Walmart and then added the ribbon.  I leaned toward the stripe but was talked out of it. 

The afternoon was really lovely.  There was plenty of food, wine, beer, and soft drinks.  I stuck mainly to chocolate covered strawberries as I am gluten sensitive.  Pretty healthy, too.  Heh, heh.

There was a good crowd and the live and silent auctions went well.  I think there was a good amount raised for the new art center.

Deborah Johnson was the winner of the raffle for my painting. Congratulations!
