I've followed Karen for years on wetcanvas and her blog and painting videos.  She is very generous and a good teacher.  I found Karen's video helpful in using a wet under painting and painting mountains and flowers.

One of the photos for the November Challenge in the Southwest Forum of wetcanvas was a cute miniature horse belonging to Sheila in Alberta, Canada.  My watercolor doesn't do the pony any favors.  I learn something every time I paint, so that is wonderful.

The official birthday of the United States Marine Corps is on 10 November 1775. That was the day when the Second Continental Congress established the Continental Marines with the following decree:^[1]

“

That two battalions of Marines be raised consisting of one Colonel, two lieutenant-colonels, two majors and other officers, as usual in other regiments; that they consist of an equal number of privates as with other battalions, that particular care be taken that no persons be appointed to offices, or enlisted into said battalions, but such as are good seamen, or so acquainted with maritime affairs as to be able to serve for and during the present war with Great Britain and the Colonies; unless dismissed by Congress; that they be distinguished by the names of the First and Second Battalions of Marines.

”

Tun Tavern, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is regarded as the birthplace of the Corps as the location of the first Marines to enlist under Commandant Samuel Nicholas,^[2][3][4] though it is disputed if a recruiting drive may have occurred earlier at Nicholas's family tavern, the Conestoga Waggon [sic].^[5] When the Revolutionary War ended in 1783, the Continental Navy was disestablished, and with it, the Continental Marines. The Corps was re-established on 11 July 1798, when the "act for establishing and organizing a Marine Corps" was signed by President John Adams.^[6]

Happy Birthday Anniversary Number 241, Marines!

Happy Birthday to all our Marines!  It is number 241, which is older than our country.  Wow.  So proud of them all.  Thanks to each and every one of you for your service!!

We have our own Marine, David.  A couple of photos with our other Air Force veteran, Gene.  Veterans Day is close at hand and best wishes and thanks to all of our vets, too!

It is birthday number 240 for the United States Marine Corps.  They were established in 1775, so almost a year older than our country.

Hunting - Bra?

Yes, hunting something supportive -- a bra.  Did the headline grab your attention?  Looking for something to sketch is not always easy.  Also on the Scavenger Hunts we try to be a bit different.  My "spiral" was pretty normal.  Looking for "supportive" was a challenge.  Kivrin, from the Scavenger Hunt,  had sketched a cane.  We have plenty of those around but I wanted something more.   Hmmmm.

I sketched yesterday in the big sketchbook with the Micron 05 pen, just a few minutes, freehand.  This is for Scavenger Hunt 355.

Kristopher posted many sketches and stories during his time as a Marine Corps Artist.  Browse through his blog.  You can learn about painting, sculpting, sketching in battle and the Marines.

Bad News:  Kristopher was released from active duty recently.  Are they downsizing and cutting the budget this way?  I guess art is always the first to go in education. To me the sketches and paintings mean more than a photo.

Art for the Wounded

Michael Fay has started a new project to remember our wounded, people that survive war and live on to inspire us.  The Joe Bonham Project is up and running.

Most of you know that I have been following the blogs of Michael Fay and Kristopher Battles, Marine Corps artists.  Their dedication and wonderful artwork are so inspiring.

After reviewing their blogs and links, how can we possibly complain?  Thanks to Michael and Kristopher and a huge thank you to our soldiers that protect our freedom every day.   Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Veteran's Day Rememberance

A special day to remember our Veterans. We all have family members that have served our country, taking care of us.  I want to thank them one and all.  Immediately in my family; husband, Gene and son, David.  My brother, Powder, was in the Army and was in the Invasion of Normandy.

I have had a notice of this day on my calendar for two weeks and still did not do a special post and look up some great photos of the Marines at the Embassy when we were in South America. I will have to point to my post of last year.  Of course you will have to keep going back to get some photos.

Marine Corps Artists

After my rant about the troops I decided I have been neglecting the Marine Corps Artists' Blogs. I visited Michael Fay's blog, Fire and Ice, to find he is back in Afghanistan since May. I can't believe it had been that long since I looked at his blog.

He retired and is now there as part of the press. His sketches are amazing and his stories bring us all closer to the front lines. Very scary. I wish him the best and will be thinking of him and his family here in the States.

Kristopher Battles is still painting away, too. He was in Haiti for the rescue mission. He is painting more and is doing a great job.
