Happy Birthday US Marines! And more.

It is the birthday of our United States Marine Corps.

The official message is a video on this page:

https://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/your-marine-corps/2021/11/08/the-246th-marine-corps-birthday-message-is-here/

The Marine Corps ball was cancelled in Washington and other areas.  That stinks!  It is one of the neatest celebrations.  I have photos in these posts:

Happy Birthday to Our U.S. Marine Corps - Zeke, Watercolor and Hunting

Happy 244th Birthday to our Marine Corps!  Especially our own, David.

He was sooooo young.  Semper Fi!

One of the photos for the November Challenge in the Southwest Forum of wetcanvas was a cute miniature horse belonging to Sheila in Alberta, Canada.  My watercolor doesn't do the pony any favors.  I learn something every time I paint, so that is wonderful.

He looks a little scared in my sketch!  Water spreads and runs ... it is water after all.

For Scavenger Hunt 609, Mary picked junk drawer, so we both sketched that.  I picked art tool for my next sketch so they would fit on the page.

These were sketched with a Prismacolor 05 in the big book.

Happy Veteran's Day and Happy Belated Marine Corps Birthday #242!

We celebrated here yesterday with messages back and forth with our Marine, David.  I forgot to post here about it.  Sigh....

You can put Marines in the search box on my blog and see photos of David and of  Gene and I at the Marine Corps Ball when we were overseas.  It is the "grandest" day at our Embassies except for Independence Day.  Semper Fi.

You can read the message from General Robert B. Neller, Marine Corps Commandant, here:
https://www.mca-marines.org/gazette/2017/11/242nd-marine-corps-birthday-message-commandant-marine-corps

Happy 242 David and all the Marines!  Semper Fi!

Today we are going to the Veterans Celebration here in Bastrop.  It is always a nice thing.  Then this evening to dinner in Smithville and to The Bugle Boy for some Susan Gibson.

Hope you have a great Veterans Day!!  Thanks to all the veterans for their service!!  We are the land of the free because of the BRAVE.

Our vets, David and Gene.

Happy Birthday Marines!

Happy Birthday number 234 to all the U.S. Marines! Semper Fi!

I have had a notice of this day on my calendar for two weeks and still did not do a special post and look up some great photos of the Marines at the Embassy when we were in South America. I will have to point to my post of last year.

And here is a quote from Gene's daily posts from and about Marines.

Freedom is not free, but the U.S. Marine Corps will pay most of your share.
..................................... Ned Dolan, Capt. USMC

Be sure and check out the post today by Michael Fay, Marine Corp Artist, for a video of the 2009 Marine Corps Birthday message. He is also retiring.

And the other Marine Corps artist whose blog I follow, Kristopher Battles has a post up, too.

Happy Birthday Marines! And a big Happy Birthday to our Marine, David!!!

Happy Birthday, Marines!

The U.S. Marine Corps will be having their 233rd birthday today! Semper Fi and a big Happy Birthday to all!!

Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference, the Marines don't have that problem. -- Ronald Reagan, 1985

When we were overseas we had the privilege of being invited to the annual Marine Corps Ball to celebrate the birthday. Such an honor and such fun. One year in Chile, the Embassy personnel posted guard duty at the Embassy and the Consulate so the Marines could all go to the Ball. Gene and I watched the Consulate building on the midnight shift. Gene pulled duty several times, but that was the only time I got to go with him. Later they would have the Balls on different days in Peru and Bolivia and the Marines would come and go to cover duty so the local Marines could all attend the Ball. The Ball was always the most elegant evening of Embassy parties. The Marines would attend in their dress blues. There would be the presentation of the Colors and the birthday ceremony. The ceremony always included the oldest Marine and the youngest Marine to cut the cake with the white gloves on with their saber and have the first pieces. They would have wine/champagne glasses with the year and Marine Corps insignia and date. We have a few of those that have made it through several moves.

Gene and I a few years ago!

It was wonderful to be invited and share a birthday with these special men.

David, Cole and Christy

Once a Marine always a Marine! That is our son David. Here is the post with photo from last year. Hey David, Happy Birthday! There is a link there and here to a beautiful tribute to the Marines from 2006.

I wonder where my photos of the Embassy Marines are. Hmmmm.

Marine Birthday and Sketching

Happy Birthday to the United States Marines!!
From Wikipedia:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Marine_Corps_birthday

The official birthday of the United States Marine Corps is on 10 November 1775. That was the day when the Second Continental Congress established the Continental Marines with the following decree:[1]
Tun Tavern, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is regarded as the birthplace of the Corps as the location of the first Marines to enlist under Commandant Samuel Nicholas,[2][3][4] though it is disputed if a recruiting drive may have occurred earlier at Nicholas's family tavern, the Conestoga Waggon [sic].[5] When the Revolutionary War ended in 1783, the Continental Navy was disestablished, and with it, the Continental Marines. The Corps was re-established on 11 July 1798, when the "act for establishing and organizing a Marine Corps" was signed by President John Adams.[6]

We always enjoyed the Marine birthday parties overseas.  You can read about our Marine, David, and more here on previous posts:  https://jocastilloartblog.blogspot.com/search?q=marine+birthday

It will be Veterans Day as well on Monday.  We hope to get to the parade and ceremony here today, it is a bit cool out (for us) at about 50 degrees this morning.

Thanks to the Marines and all Veterans, including hubby, Gene, for their service.  Semper Fi!!

David and Gene

I sketched yesterday for Scavenger Hunt 564  http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1456765  which I am hosting.

Number 1, book cover - a book by our artist friend Kelly Borsheim.  She moved to Italy a few years ago and painted on the streets in Florence.  Go have a look, you will be amazed and find so much wonderful art, sculptures, paintings, photos and stories.  The cover is from Kelly's book about her time painting on the streets in Italy. She moved from Bastrop to Italy a few years ago. Prolific artist and writer. http://borsheimarts.com/ And the new streamlined version (better on phones) http://kborsheim.faso.com/works

Marine Corps Art

The Marine Corps Birthday is coming soon.  They have been around longer than our country, you know.  Thanks, Marines.

I follow a couple of Marine Corps artists, see my side bar.  This is a great article about Michael Fay. Amazing art and stories paying tribute to our wounded.  Thanks, Michael.

It is birthday number 240 for the United States Marine Corps.  They were established in 1775, so almost a year older than our country.

Happy Birthday, Marines!

Veterans Day and Marine Corps Birthday

Today we honor our Veterans.  Thank you for your service.

Here is a great article about some deserving veterans, the World War II, Doolittle Raiders.

Thanks, David, Gene, Powder, Joe, Paul and all the other veterans, for your service!

Almost the Marine Corps Birthday...

The Marine Corps Birthday is in a few days.  I started thinking about David, our son, and the Marines and Gene, spouse, Air Force, and all our service personnel and thought you might like to show this to the younger folks.

Sketches on Marine's Birthday

Another shout out to the United States Marine Corps, "Happy Birthday number 241!"

I sketched this morning at the dining table in the big book with a Micron 05 pen.  It was probably about 30 minutes for all sketches.

Number 3, something used daily - Napkins and Salt and Pepper
Number 4, something used rarely - Waffle iron
Number 5, something in front of you - looking out the window

I will set this to post this evening, I don't want it to push my Marine Birthday post down the page.  Hope you all had a great day!

Did I mention that Gene got a wonderful birthday present?  The kiddos had a song written about him and performed by George Ensle.  I'm pretty sure I posted about this.  Anyway, he was saying that it is his favorite song now and listens to it daily.

That reminded me about my mom and I may have said this before as well.  They listened to the radio as there were no TV sets.  In the morning they listened to KOB in Albuquerque.  They had news and  a morning variety show.  Mom always said, "Oh, that is my favorite song!", when just about any song was playing.  She sang and played the piano by ear, so she knew many of them.   However, she did not care for Frank Sinatra.  They played him often on the morning show.  She wrote to the station and told them to quit playing Frank's songs.  She told them that the songs made the cows cry and drew a picture to prove it!

Belated Happy Birthday to the U. S. Marine Corps!

Here is Marine son's, David, comment from my Veterans Day post. "Thanks for thinking of the veterans Mom and Happy Birthday to all my fellow Marines. OOORAH!!"

Arghhh. I forgot this, sorry David. Below is my post from last year. It seems appropriate to repeat it! It takes a few minutes to load on high speed. Now it is 232 years. The birthday is November 10.

This is David when he came home after bootcamp, and the rest of us except Gene. Was he taking the photo?

My post from last year:

"The Marines have 231 years of service today. Happy Birthday. Here is a tribute to them. It is very long but a nice tribute to the Marines including our son. Thank you all for your service to our country.

Semper Fi"

Happy Birthday, Marines!

Today is birthday #236 for our Marines.  We are so thankful for all their sacrifices.  Check them out on their website.

I grabbed a couple of photos of our Marine, David, from his facebook page.  Thanks, David, and Happy Birthday.

These were a while back, eh?  Lookin' good.

You can check my post from last year, too.  We always had such good support from the Marines during our stints in South America.  We went to the Marine Corps balls (photo of us there) and went to the Marine House for parties and happy hours.  Great bunch!  Thanks to all of you for your service.

Semper fi!

Back in the Saddle Posting

I can post again from my iMac.  Yay!  Joanna took mine that wasn't working and repurposed one she had with all my "stuff".  Isn't she a great daughter?  Evidently the graphic card quit working on the old one.  So here we go, back in the saddle again....

We were out on the porch, routine, right?  I sketched in the big book with the Prismacolor 03 fine line marker/pen.

Number 4, outside chair - the chair I usually sketch in.  I sat on the glider with the book in my lap instead of on the stool.  Different.

It was a lovely morning.  A bit cloudy so still cool.  We have had great weather for June, no 100 degree days.  Wait until next week!

Happy Fourth of July to all!  We had a great day.  Family and celebrated Joanna's birthday.

 Happy Birthday, Joanna!

We had pinto beans and rice with red New Mexico chile, homemade flour tortillas and carrot cake (a tradition for Joanna's birthday).  We didn't take photos.  I don't know why as we were seeing many photos of our family from Kentucky all day with the three great grandsons. They had a great time.  David put up a new flag pole and hung his American Flag and the US Marine Corps Flag.  Very nice!
(It was our nephew's, Jerry and Cody, birthday, too.)

Later after the kids left,  Gene and I  watched the Salute to America with speech by President Trump.  It was a historical speech outlining all the things each branch of the service has accomplished, also special Americans in attendance with a lady that serves 400 meals a day during hurricanes in Florida and other everyday "heroes".  There were flyovers (I love seeing those.) with different aircraft from the different branches of the military.  There were a couple of tanks on the mall.  It was an uplifting speech highlighting how Americans working together have accomplished such great things.

Then we watched the PBS Capitol special.  They had heroes and many amazing folks, too.  The fireworks were so many that the smoke was thick and you couldn't even see the fireworks at times.  Pretty darn nifty salute to our great country.  I especially liked the Music Corps with disabled vets performing and the showing of the military families.  When you see the sacrifices made my our military and their families, it makes our freedom more special.    Thanks to all the military, police, firemen, first res-ponders and the hard working folks in our good old USA!

Pastel Painting, golf photos and Happy27th Birthday to Jesse

I started a large 24 x 18 inch pastel today. A New Mexico scene for my show in July. I like the start. I used a Pastelbord I had painted previously. I brushed the pastel off with a soft paint brush then washed it with the hose outside yesterday evening. The pastel left the shadow stain but not important as I was going to put an under painting anyway.

Today I put blue pastel for the sky, purple for the back of the hills, red where most of the trees and vegetation will be and purple where the yellow grass will be and spread it with water on a paint brush. I meant to take a photo, but you know how I am .. I get into painting and before you know it, too late for photos of the under painting. You can see the bottom half here. This is a poor photo with a flash so will take another in the morning. I just wanted you to know I did paint today. Looks like the Grand Canyon in front at the moment!

This morning we went to the golf course. The crepe myrtles are in full bloom. They look great in between the green of the pines and other trees.

I also spied a pine with a vine growing on it with red flowers. When I got close, I could see a few leaves were red, no flowers.

For the blogs today go by Skybag, Jesse, and wish her, "Happy 27th Birthday!" She is the daughter of Bag Blog, Lou, that comments on my blog. Skybag takes photos and paints once in a while, following in her mom's footsteps. She will be surprised if we all go post on June 4, Thursday, don't you think?

This is a good day to remind you about the blogs of the Marine Corps artists that I follow, as well. These guys are amazing artists and active Marines as well. Thanks to them for their service and sharing their art with us!

Glassware Sketch

I intended to sketch most of this Hunt at Jennie's in order to have some "new" items for sketching.  That didn't happen so we are back to things I have sketched or drawn before.  The sketches always come out different, hopefully, so it is not so boring.

I sketched in the big book at the dining table.  I could see the inside of the hutch.  Quite a few of the wine glasses on the middle shelf are in the dishwasher.  We usually have wine every day.

For Scavenger Hunt 655 on wetcanvas.  I will put a link and you can check out the Hunts.  Most of us are putting up our sketches as attachments so they will be larger.  If you are not a member, I don't think you see attachments.  That is not a good way to get new members and visitors.  After the big change, we have lost many regular sketchers and painters.  The site is more cumbersome and was always hard to get to your destination without a link.  Some of us are diehards and seem to just hang around and persevere.

https://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/topic/scavenger-hunt-655-nov-07-15/

If you can persevere, come on over and sketch with us.  Most of the sketchers have been around since 2006-2007.  Dedicated....

Number 4, glassware - The hutch in the dining room.  There are a couple of Kachina Dolls on the top shelf.  I keep them in there to keep the dust off.  The glassware consists of glasses, the big plate, butter dish and salsa dishes, oh, and lids to the Corning Ware.  I used a Micron 02 pen and a quick dash of colored pencil.  So boring for me to go over and over things with colored pencil.  I like color down and done .. are you thinking pastels, ink, oil paint?  The oil paint needs to dry, though.

We had a quiet couple of days.  Yesterday was Veterans Day and the day before was the Marine Corps Birthday.  Shame on me for not posting.  We are so thankful for our Marine, David, and for all the veterans in the family and friends.  There are a bunch.  At David's work they put a card, flag, candy and gum on his desk.  They put signs in honor of the Veterans outside to welcome them to work.  Very nice!

Behinder yet again.

Happy Birthday, Joanna, and Happy Independence Day 2021

Happy Birthday, Joanna.  Yep, another year of celebrating Joanna's birthday.  Hope she has a nice day.  We did the celebrating last night because Bastrop had Patriotic Day yesterday.  It looked like they had a great time with games, food, contests, music and ending with the great fireworks.  They go all out for a small town.  For the fireworks, we found a new vantage point by the library which seemed cooler on the hill and not right down at the river.  We could hear the Elvis impersonator and the recorded music for the fireworks.  They had a choir for the patriotic songs just before the fireworks but they were not boosted by speakers so we couldn't hear them very well.  We do miss the Austin Symphonic Band, they used to come every year to Bastrop.  Miss the trombones and cymbols.

We still had a good time with our New Mexican food dinner as requested by the birthday girl, uh woman.  Doesn't seem possible.  How time flies.

Here we are.  Gene doesn't like the noise and crowds so he stayed home and watched the house.  He said there were lots for fireworks very close by.  We had a couple of inches of rain in the afternoon so at least there shouldn't have been any fires.

The evening was beautiful after the rain.  You can see the roofs of the food area down below us.  The fireworks were right over the middle trees.  Beautiful.

These are some shots from a video Joanna took.  Came out pretty good, don't you think?

Hope you all have a great day!  So thankful for our troops and first responders!  We thank them for our freedom.

Here is the Marine Corps band's version of Stars and Stripes Forever.  Love it!
