Doodad Sketch

I sketched on my iPad with the App, Brushes.  I wanted color but was not interested in bringing watercolors to the living room and we were watching TV.  So my footstool was table.  Not sure why I used my fingers and didn't use the pencil for the lines.  Just my sketching mind so not very even lines.

Number 1 doodad - a thing Gene got for Christmas from Joanna.  Seems to have been made on a 3D Printer.  It can be pushed into a few shapes but does not come apart.  Sort of like a Rubic's cube in that way.  Pretty colors!

Here is a couple of photos.

We are having a couple of days of winter.  High today was 45ยบ and expect the same tomorrow.  The wind blew hard and made the "feel like" temp in the 20s.  Brrr.  Happy it is only for a couple of days.  We should be back in the 70s for the weekend.  Crazy.

It was a good day for the leftover posole.  That is a soup made of the hominy that has been cured with lime, pork, red chile and spices of oregano and garlic.  We added beans and more chile.  I ate mine with saltines and Gene had flour tortillas.  Sooo good in cold weather.  Some folks add grated radishes on top and a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime.

Heart Potato - What?

Scavenger Hunt 178 is almost over.  I am hosting so decided I should get in one more sketch to have a few done for the 12 days.  I have been very absent from sketching.  You may have noticed!!

Jennie decided she wanted a regular "Sunday" breakfast yesterday.  So she pulled out the new 5 pound bag of potatoes to get some out to peel.  This heart shaped potato was in the bag for "Christmas".  Pretty cool.  Jennie did not peel it.  We did have a great breakfast with all the leftovers and sausage and potatoes added.  Tamales and enchiladas are so good for breakfast with added eggs on top.

For Scavenger Hunt 178 https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-178-dec-16-dec-28.8557/

Number ? apple - subbed the potato
Number ? red - the napkin holder and place mat
The sketch was done on my new hand me down iPad from Jennie.  I get the second latest things when she gets the latest.  Well, she probably splits them between the family that need an upgrade.  Larry and I both have Apple watches now which we wouldn't have otherwise.

And here is the actual potato.  Pretty nifty.

We had great Christmas fun and now it is very, very quiet here.  Hope you are having a good time as well.

Green and Pine Cone Sketch

Items on the new Hunt are pine cone or tree bark and green.  I thought I would sketch part of the new little Christmas tree.  It is pretty cute.  It came with some pine cones and red berries attached.  It has one string of lights on a battery.  I added 2 strings of plug in lights, some red balls and  a string of artificial pop corn with berries.  One string of lights has round bulbs that look like lighted Christmas balls.  Sort of cute and different.

Number 1 green - the tree
Number 2 pine cone

For Scavenger Hunt 177 https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-178-dec-16-dec-28.8557/

This sketch was created on my iPad with the app, Brushes, and my fingers.  I was in a hurry to go to PT for Gene and forgot to sketch the popcorn.  Pretty typical of my art work lately.

Fast Moving Sketch

I was on the porch and wanted to sketch the clouds in color so got the handy iPad.  The clouds were zooming by.  I used the app, Brushes, and my fingers.  Probably took about 20 minutes.

This is a time lapse of the clouds when I went on the porch.

I knew I had to be fast for sketching.

For Scavenger Hunt 175 https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-175-november-10-22.8451/

Number 1 moves fast - clouds on my iPad.  It didn't look as purple on my iPad.  Hmm.

Clouds when I started the sketch.

Clouds when I finished....

Just a short sketch.  Clouds are amazing to watch and try to catch in a painting or sketch.

Table on the Porch

Of course I sketched on the porch.  When it isn't too hot and muggy, that is the place to be early in the morning with my coffee and snack.  I had an HEB protein bar today.  I hadn't had one in a while.  They are so good and about half the price of the name brands.

For Scavenger Hunt 165 https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-165-jul-13-25.8088/

Number 4 table - one of the glass end tables.  The shed and trees through the screen in the background.

I do not use layers or do many changes on my iPad sketches.  I try to have them be just like my sketches with a pen or pastels.  I do use different brushes to get texture, like the triangles on the leaves.  I also use different pressure on the brushes like for the reflections on the table.

I don't do digital sketches very often so it is always a learning curve to remember what I did before.  Therefore, it takes longer to sketch on my iPad, iPhone or iMac.

Yellow Not My Favorite

Why did I put Yellow on the list?  I always have a hard time finding yellow in our house.  It has to be tools or food.  We haven't had bananas lately.  I sketched with my Apple Pencil and the app, Brushes, on my iPad so I could have color without dragging out other stuff like watercolors or pastels.  Lazy me.

For Scavenger Hunt from Life 163  https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-163-jun-19-jul-01.8038/

Number 2 yellow - the prune can is mostly yellow.  Hard to make perfect ellipses with my shaky hands.  Fun to try anyway.

Physical therapy today, pick up groceries and have the wasps and ants sprayed.  Always something going on.

Salty Jalapeรฑos

A new Hunt with "salt" and "onion or other vegetable" on the list.  I never have onions here except fresh green onions if I'm doing Chinese or eating a sandwich and thinking of my dad.  He always had green onions in his garden.  We would listen to baseball games, eat sandwiches and dip them in salt and maybe the green chile fresh as well.  Yummy.

I decided I would like color but didn't want to do watercolor or pastels so got the iPad out.  I was almost finished with the sketch and somehow put a "layer" on and then deleted the whole thing as I never use layers in the App, Brushes.  Sigh.  Doing over is so boring so I lost some of my detail and inspiration.  I think it was much better on the first go.

For Scavenger Hunt 161 https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-161-may-27-june-7.7996/

Number 1 Salt and Number 2 veggie - some jalepeรฑos.

The salt grinder is about 5 years old, Kirkland brand, says it is Mediterranean Sea Salt.  Hmmm.  Not sure why I have it.

We tried a new service today.  Valet service from Sames Ford here in Bastrop.  The car needed an oil change and general check up.  They picked it up and brought it back, no extra charge.  So nice for us not to have to go sit at the garage.

Effortless Sketching

Sketching is calling but my effort is not answering, so ... effortless.  I did finally sketch in the Conda Sketchpad with the Micron 03 yesterday morning very early.  I sketched the little tin with a Micron 03.  Today at my comfy chair I sketched on my iPad with the app, Brushes, looking over my shoulder at the shelf over the kitchen stove.  Lazy me....

For Scavenger Hunt from Life 154 https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-154-mar-27-ap-4.7882/

Number 1, comes in a tin - an old tin from Big 12 Baseball.  Mints are probably desentegrating.

Number 2, brings back memory - the mugs, tins and more on the shelf in the kitchen over the stove.  I probably missed a few things.

Baseball

The Longhorns won the series in Missouri in a big way.  Lots of home runs and great plays.  There were a few injuries, hope not too serious. The substitute players did well though.  They had a double header yesterday as they expected weather today in Columbia, Missoouri, so no game today.  Next game is Tuesday night against Texas State in Austin.  We as a family can't lose as Joanna went to UT and Larry went to Texas State.  Hook 'em Horns!

Treat in Digi

I picked up a piece of candy from the dish on the cabinet and remembered treat was on the list.  Perfect.  We've never had Dove, peanut butter/chocolate pieces.  Dove candies are wrapped in foil with a little saying inside.  I decided to look at the saying then just popped the candy in my mouth!  Oops.  No candy treat!

So for Hunt 147   https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-147-jan-30-feb-7.7690/

Number 7 treat - well, the treat wrapper.  I sketched on my iPad with the app ArtRage because it has a metal setting.  It looks a little like foil.  My shadows are a little dark.  Fun to try.

We had lunch with friends today in San Marcos.  We have known the husband from high school.  I've mentioned Jerry before I'm pretty sure.  Do you realize that is about 65 years since high school?  We can talk about high school and now about doctor visits.

We asked Larry to join us as it is his real birthday today.  We celebrated on Saturday and a couple of his gifts didn't arrive so wanted to give them to him.  He was patient to listen to the stories he has heard so many times.

It was a good lunch.  We ate at Chili's.  Larry and Gene and I hadn't eaten at Chili's in 15 years or so.  Maybe there is one near you?

Another summer day.  Wonder what's coming next?

Happy Birthday, Larry!

More on the Footstool

I sat at my footstool and sketched on my iPad with the App Brushes and my Apple pencil.  It took soooo long.  I almost abandoned it.  I should have gone in the studio and played in the dust!

For Scavenger Hunt from Life 146  https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-146-jan-22-jan-30-2025.7660/

Number 1 metal and Number 2 ceramic

The mugs are new gifts from Lou and Toby.  They are hand painted with reminders of New Mexico so each is a bit different.  The cups are very uniform in size.  Beautiful.  Love them....  My new favorite mugs.

The copper thing is a candle holder with holes for the light to peek out.  It doesn't look copper.  I should have taken a photo.  I'm sure you will have the opportunity to see them all again.

Silver - Decoration iPad Sketch

I was too lazy to get out the pastel paper or move to get some ink.  I sketched on my iPad for convenience.  iPad sketches take longer than regular sketches so after I started the sketch I was wishing I had spent a few minutes to change media.

For Scavenger Hunt from Life 141 https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-141-dec-13-%E2%80%93-20-2024.7498/

Number 3 silver - I substituted a pewter vase from Bolivia
Number 4 decoration - these are more felt flowers made by Katie/Kathy

We had a few cool days and cold mornings so got a bit of fall color and trees losing their leaves.  I was wondering if it would happen because it had been so warm.  Here are a few photos of the back yard.

Near the mailbox.

The trees are losing their leaves.
The little tree was pretty orange and now losing leaves.

I did get the tree up as well.  I did not put all the decorations on it, but it is done. Now to wrap a few presents.

Hopefully you are about ready for the Christmas and other holidays. Wishing you the best!!

iPad Landscape

I went out on the porch this morning for coffee and rice cake.  While there I remembered "landscape" was on the list and being my lazy self I sketched on my iPad where I was checking messages.

It was great out there.  The many hummers were going crazy so I filled the feeders and was going to get a photo, but after they had food, they simmered down and got back to one or two at a time.  It must be time for them to go south.  We haven't had more than two at a time this summer.

I used the app Brushes and the Apple Pencil.  No fancy brushes, just tried a "pen" with different size nibs like REAL sketching, right?

Number 8 landscape

For Scavenger Hunt from Life 128 https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-128-aug-31-sept-8.7239/

I played in the pastel dust the other day and didn't post here.  Crazy UArt paper.  Ugh.  I will try to post about it up later.  That paper is my nemesis wet or dry.  I like a flat surface and that paper curls on me no matter how much tape I use.  The paper is still taped and barely hanging on the foam core but will probably fall off soon.

Digi Breakfast Sketch

I decided to try the breakfast sketch.  You can see I started eating and then had to suffer as it took about 30 minutes to finish the sketch.

Sketched on my iPad with the App, Brushes, and my fingers and Apple Pencil.  The plate is dark red and round.  It looked good on the iPad outside but looks pretty fuchsia here on my iMac.

Number 9 breakfast - rice cake with peanut butter, cream cheese and banana with some grapes on the side.  I eat rice cakes so often that I sort of have withdrawal when I don't have one sometime during the day.  Lots of crunch for my gluten free world.  I like the plain lightly salted ones.  The flavored ones are so artificial.  Better to have the crunch and the flavor of what you put on.  I use them for avocado "toast", sandwiches and more.

New Hunt Old Items

A new Hunt and old items.  We don't do a lot of upgrading on the house in our dotage so not many new things to sketch except food.  I don't think I've sketched a kitchen rubber glove before.  I wonder.

For Scavenger Hunt from Life 125  https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-125-aug-07-aug-15-aiarts-ai.7142/

Number 1, for use on our hand - rubber glove.  In the Little Fingers Sketch Pad tablet with a Micron 03 that is on its last leg.  The ink and nib running out.  It made some fuzzy lines which was good.  I did have to sharpen it in my Photoshop app so you could see it here.

Blogger and Apple Safari are having a thing.  I tried to sign in on Safari and Blogger/Google wanted me to use cookies for all my Google surfing.  I fiddled with it a few minutes trying to use cookies just for the blog with no success so I went back to Firefox.  Firefox probably uses cookies but doesn't lecture me about it.  Ha.

Google wants me to use Chrome but I don't use it unless some site doesn't work with Firefox or Safari.  What a mess.  More security seems to me like I just get more information on line all the time.  Google wants me to use my fingerprint .. not sure how good that is.  It would be handy on my computer but seems more invasive than my passwords.    It will check with my tech support -- Joanna.

Hope you are having a great week.  We are going to check out a new place for PT for Gene.  It takes time to go there but I can sketch and shop for an hour each time.  We will see what they have to offer.

Fabric and Plastic Sketch

It was nice enough to sit on the porch a while this morning.  It has been up in the 100s for a few days so about 85ยบ F at 7:30 a.m.   I sketched on my iPad with the Apple Pencil and fingers.  It probably took me an hour.  Much slower than pastels or ink sketching.

For Scavenger Hunt from Life 124 https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-124-july-30-aug-7.7120/

Number 2 fabric - sock and pants
Number 3 plastic - sub the soles are sort of a rubbery plastic?? and the aglets are plastic.  My background looked more gray on the porch in the outdoor light on my screen.  Guess it makes the shoes more colorful.  This is my second pair of these shoes, I like them a lot.  The first pair has the whole sole on the bottom pink.  This pair the sole is black with the pink pieces on the edges.

We can always make substitutions on the Hunts.  It is fun to see all the different takes on the items.

We went for our annual checkups a couple of weeks ago and Dr. Pompeyo Chavez (our amazing doctor) recommended I get my ears checked.  Their system showed my right ear was a bit off.  They did flush it out and today I went to have them checked.  I passed with flying colors.  I thought I was having more trouble with white noise but no more than normal.  Maybe it is just because white noise bothers me.  I get so calm when all the motors stop in the house at night.  The a/c goes off, the fan goes off, refrigerator doesn't run, etc.  I love that.  So maybe I'm just agitated with the noise and that bothers more than my hearing when I'm around the "static".  At any rate, happy to know I'm not needing hearing aids.

Nailed It

A new Hunt 122 is underway.  I sketched at my chair in the living room on my iPad.

It's a weird morning after  Donald Trump was shot at and the spectators hit in the line of fire.  Praying for those families.  God Bless America!

New! Hunt 121 Of Course

A new Hunt underway.  A fresh start with fresh ideas, right?

Number 1 - yogurt, vanilla from HEB  I started on my iPad with the app, Art Rage so I could have a "metal" look.  I worked quickly of course, that is supposed to be a metal spoon in the yogurt with an aluminum lid.

https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-121-jul-06-jul-14.7034/

I have been doing my usual, which is nothing.

This El Arroyo sign fits perfect today, actually for the week.  They change their sign often.  You can see more of the signs here, in Austin you can go eat there!  We haven't done that after all these years, hmmmm.....

https://elarroyo.com/

Did I put this up a while back.  Probably.

Hunt 120 is Well Underway

I'm late on the draw (literally).  The Hunt 120 started on June 28.  Typical of me, don't you think?  Worse every day.  We will blame it on age.  As indecisive and forgetful as I am, I cannot imagine Biden running our country .. he might forget to call a meeting or miss one. We need younger patriotic folks running our government.   But that's another story.   See how "my" mind wanders.  Sigh.....

Back to art.  For Scavenger Hunt 120 https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-120-june-28-july-6.6992/

 Number 1, landscape

I sketched on the porch on my iPad with the App brushes.  I wanted color and didn't want to drag my pastels to the porch.  I broke my plein air easel and haven't dug out my old one.  See how I go.  It was overcast and things were not too bright and shiny.

I came in, started my post to creativespark.art and decided to take a photo.  The sun is out now and beating down with a vengeance.

I wonder how many times I've sketched this view?  The lakes are getting so low.  They were dry when we moved in in 2011 and I think it was the next spring that we had enough rain to overflow the two lakes and fill them up.  We need another gully-washer.

Today is prep for Joanna's birthday.  Her car gave her problems over the weekend and she has been using one of ours.  We change cars today and I will cook and make a Carrot Cake for her day.  We will have some New Mexican food.   Larry is traveling so he won't be here. He is off in cool weather like upstate New York.   Dang.  It will all be good, I hope.

Remember Memorial Day

Happy Memorial Day in the USA.
Thinking of our fallen Veterans on this day and thankful for their service and dedication and sacrifice that makes us free! Have a beautiful day and speak a name of one of ours. In our family, Neil Garrett in the Korean War.

I sketched for Hunt 115 https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-115-may-19-may-27.6867/page-3

Number 8 crunchy - an open jar of peanuts from  H-E-B.  I had some on my avocado toast this morning.  Done with the Brushes app and ApplePencil.

** *** ** *** ** ***

Check out this watercolor demonstration at the American Watercolor Society with John Salminen.  He is fun to watch with great tips on technique.  The ending is great.  It is about 40 minutes long.
