Public Space Sketch

 It was an absolutely glorious day today.  About 80º F when I was sketching.  I sat on the pillar support and sketched while Gene was in PT.

Number 4 public space - I sketched in the Ohuhu sketchbook with an Ohuhu .5 pen and watercolors.  I was pleased with the cars for the most part.  I'm not usually too happy with my cars as they don't resemble the actual vehicle.  I like the first, second and fourth, left to right.  The third car ended up looking like a "kit" car or revamped in some way with the tire so large.  I also didn't color the passenger side tire .. maybe it was flat and colorless.  Yeah, right.  It was a very low slung sedan in silver and quite a lovely little car.   Always a surprise when you don't see things until you add color.

Joan Tavolott mentioned that she always tries to sketch what will be moving out of her sketch first.  Great idea.  I decided I better sketch the cars before someone parked in front of me or  the cars moved.  No one parked until I was just finishing the last and then they only stayed about 5 minutes and came and moved.  The parked sketch models stayed.  Thanks, Joan.

Pastel - Ink and Link

Pastels called to me this morning.  Actually they have been calling for a few days.  I only had a short while to work on this so a sketch for the Scavenger Hunt.

 Number 5, 6 and 7 - bowl, animal and cup.  This is on the wiped off piece of Pastelbord, 9 x 12 inches.  I may work on it again to correct the bowl and make the whole thing lighter and brighter.  

 And the set up.

Later we went to a check up for Gene. All good, back in 6 months.   I sketched with a Micron 03 in my small Canson regular paper sketchbook.  We moved several times for lab, see the doctor and a shot, so my size on my hands is a bit off.  It was fun to work in spurts.

I have followed Julian Mero-Smith for years.  A daily painter that probably started the popular movement a few years ago.  Right now, Plein Air has taken over.  I still follow several artists that continue to paint daily.  I love these strawberries.  They are in a basket, haven't seen those in years.  You can look at more of his work by clicking on previous or next.  His still life work is my favorite.

Paper-Rock-Scissors and Pin Holes

Paper, rock and scissors were items on the Hunt.  A couple of our artists sketched their hand in the different positions for the "game".  I took a different approach.

Number 2 rock, Number 3 scissors and Number 4 paper.  The rock is one of the ones the great grands found for me to sketch.  It is dark brown on the inside and off white on the outside.  Interesting.  The scissors are some Joanna bought for us.  They cut just about anything.  Great for opening hard plastic wrap on stuff you buy and also for cutting up boxes and other plastic for recycling.  Paper is the edge of the sketchbook.  I should have drawn the sketchbook first as my scissors don't go to the edge in my sketch as you can see.

Table That - Wait, no Don't Sketch

Confusing title, eh?  Punctuation means a lot...  Should be Table That - Wait, no Don't - Sketch.  Not No don't sketch...   Well, if you are more confused that is me....

I sketched on the porch for the first time in ages.  We got 1.16 inches of rain yesterday afternoon and early this morning.  It came with lots of thunder this morning.  Lovely rain and temperature of 72º when I got up.  Already about 86º but a good start to the day.

Number 6 table - the dining table in the Canson large sketchbook with a Micron 03.  I did the left side and quit since the door was in the way, wasn't too bad.  When I was writing the info I thought maybe I should just finish it.  So now it is lopsided and weird.  Sigh....

I follow Carol Marine, Daily Paintworks, and have for years.  She lived in Austin and I first saw her work at the Wally Workman Gallery.  She was one of the first daily painters that I saw after Duane Keiser really got things going.  Anyway, she and her family moved to Bastrop and we corresponded.  I never got to take one of her super popular workshops and we didn't get together here even though we tried a few times.  Their home burned in the fire, too, and they moved to Oregon.  At some point they started the website, Daily Paintworks.  I used it for a while but kept on just doing my own website.  She always said apples were her fallback item to paint so we had that in common.  Now she lives in Montana and has had some extreme health problems.  You can read about it on this blog post.

I have her book, Daily Painting.  It is a very good book and inspiring.  When I read about her health problems, I decided I would finally  buy one of her paintings.  I've wanted one for a long time but kept putting it off.  I'm excited for it to arrive.

End of 119 and 2 of Something

Another Hunt ending.  It went by super fast, maybe because I started it late.  Leave it to me to be running behind.  I only managed 6 sketches.  A new Hunt starts today.  I will try to do more sketches, some in pastel.

 

For the last sketch I chose two of something.  This is in the Little Fingers sketch pad with a Micron 03.  About 15 minutes or so.

Number 6 two of something - two mugs.  One burned in the fire with glass melted on it that holds some of my desk junk and my new glass mug.  It is a double layer glass which keeps the coffee hot for a while, long enough to enjoy my morning coffee.  

I dislike drinking from metal or plastic and I have been using that metal mug with plastic top.  I realized that I didn't have to do that, I could buy some new glass cups or use some of my many pottery cups.  Wake up, Jo!

 

Natasha Isenhour started a new blog.  She will discuss artsy things.  I met her in Red River/Questa a few years ago.  She was judge and one of the demo artists.  She is a pastelist, oil painter and watercolors.  Excellent knowledge and sharing person.  She lives in Socorro and knows our niece there.

Late with an Anvil

A new Hunt started on the 20th.  At least it should have.  I forgot to post it until the 21st.  That makes it a day late for us in the USA and two days late for the artists down under and in Asia. We even talked online about who was next after me and that didn't even jog my memory.  I ignored my reminders on my computer/phone calendar as well.   Getting old and forgetful .. Old Timers.

I finally got the Hunt posted and did a sketch today.

Number 1 anvil - Gene has this vice and the back can be used like an anvil.  It is hot in the garage so I brought it in to sketch.  It weighs about 15 pounds I think.  I used the Blick gray markers and Ohuhu pens in the Canson large sketchbook.

Easy to get lost in the slopes and lines.  Not too bad over all.  I'm not going to post a photo to compare, so.

Flower, Tree, Shrub Watercolor

Items on the Hunts are regular every day items.  Today I liked "flower" and "tree or shrub".  Mainly because I could sketch on the porch while drinking my coffee.  For flower it was the bedraggled geranium.  The only other flowers in my world are the wildflowers or artificial ones and I don't even have many of those.  While sketching the geranium, I could put in the big tree and the hedge in the corner. So there you are then.

Baseball note:

I watched the late game of the Big 12 Tournament.   Oklahoma State and University of Central Florida last night on TV.   UCF won 6-5 in 10 innings. I was up until 130 am or later.

Today’s games are odd.  Double headers for the winners of games 1 and 3.  Kansas and TCU play at 900 am. The winner plays Oklahoma at 1230 noon.  The winner of that plays in the championship game tomorrow at 600 pm

Texas Tech and Oklahoma State play at 4pm. The winner plays UCF at 730 pm .  Winner in championship tomorrow. 

Who knows why I watched?  I'm curious I guess about who ends up winning without the Longhorns there.  College games can go any way at any time.  In the first game today Kansas made 9 runs in the first inning and the score was Kansas 9 and TCU 10 in the 5th inning.  I will have to check and see who won.

Hunt 109 Sketches

Today was sketching at the physical therapy place while Gene worked on his walking.  I found a fire hydrant for the Hunt.  I thought I could park to the side in the shade but that was the fire lane so I backed in as far as I could on the other side for my view.  Still a bit awkward.

I sketched in the large Canson Mix Media sketchbook hoping that that would provide more stability in the car.  It did for the top of the page with the fire hydrant, not so much for the bottom with the storefront.

Abstract Joodle for December

One of the groups on creativespark.art is a Monthly Challenge.  This month's prompts are 

abstract
vegetable
artists choice

I do my Joodles (Jo-doodles) with a fine line pen usually.  I don't paint abstracts but I thought this might qualify for abstract if I splashed some coffee on the page and then doodled with a Prismacolor chisel pen. 

This last one is the orientation that I drew.  To me it looks like a chicken.  The first view above looks like a piggy looking up.  The second appears as a fish swimming to the right. And the third is like Santa with a bag on his back.  What do you see  ... if anything?

Seasonal Watercolor

After sketching from someone else's photos I decided to sketch from life in watercolor and ink.  I sketched lightly with a Micron 01 and added watercolor.  This is our only fall color near our house and in our yard.

You may have noticed some links on the sidebar to My Fine Art Friends.  We got together many years ago to help and critique each other.  After a while we drifted off to our own interests.  We have stayed in touch and I have valued their friendships and help.  

Recently I heard that Belinda Lindhardt in Australia had a horrible life experience.  In June her home burned with Belinda and children there.  There were injuries but not life threatening.  A GoFund Me was started and I had to help.  If you don't know our home burned in the big Bastrop fire in 2011, so I can sympathize.  We were fortunate to be gone at the time so did not have the mental anguish of trying to get out.  I cannot imagine.  Anyway if you care to check it out it is:

Almost End of Hunt 88 Sketch

I finally went to get some groceries.  I bought groceries in Elgin the other day but they have a smaller H.E.B. (our Texas grocery) and didn't have the wine we like or salt for the water softener.  Why mention this?  I had time to do a local building for Scavenger Hunt 88 and sketch something different for a change before I went shopping.  

Number 8, view of street or building - This is the "Cash Station" belonging to the First National Bank of Bastrop.  The ATM is in an old restored gas station in downtown Bastrop.  The pump is still out front.  It is a block from Main Street and Loop 150.  The bank built a new addition next door and connected them.  It makes me smile.

This is in the Canson drawing sketchbook for the car.  It won't take watercolor but handled the colored ink.  5.5 x 8.5 inches.

Storefront Sketches, Exhibit and More

Yesterday morning I went to get groceries.  I remembered that "storefront" was on my list for the Scavenger Hunt that I'm hosting.  So maybe a quick sketch from the car, it was too hot to be out.  I wanted to sketch "The Best Little Hair House in Texas", but it was in the middle of the block with no parking across.  I would have had to stand in the sun to sketch, so will save that for better weather.  Two other options for a little interest was the Hairport because it has Marilyn Monroe out front and the Sugarshack which has the Texas flag on the roof.  Very quick sketches as the grocery shopping takes a while.  

I know I can order groceries to pick up or be delivered, but I'm not there yet.  I make a list and then see what I like as I go.  I can't put a substitute for things on a "pick up" list because if I don't find what I want I may go a completely different direction.  I may see something I haven't purchased in a long time and think, "That would be good."  I can't order that!

The sketches are in the small travel sketchbook, done with the Acurit 03 pen.  I added watercolor this morning before I scanned the sketches.

Number 2, storefront 2 - The Sugarshack, such a fun store full of candy, gifts, balloons and more.  The sign is up on the road so I changed the chocolate covered strawberry sign to say Sugarshack.

Seasonal Texture Sketches

Looking through the list of items:  seasonal, texture, candle, hot, cold, etc.  I seem to find the easiest and most handy to sketch.  I haven't been excited to sketch lately.  You know the less you do the less you want to do.  Sometimes I sketch when we have the TV on.  It depends on what we are watching.  Mysteries require attention, otherwise.....

But today out on the porch on a pretty cool morning considering our season of deep heat I found a few things.  Lots of repeats, but new sketches for Scavenger Hunt from Life 82.

Number 1, bell - the little bell rescued from the second firing.  It is black and off white, used to be red and green for Christmas.

Number 4, texture - the wooden leg of the glider and the carpet
Number 5, growing - the poor geranium which is barely growing in this heat.  The other is worse.
Number 6, seasonal - the rain gauge with temperature and no rain.  Only 82º at 8:48 this morning, soon to be over 100º F.

College football starts today, so rootin' without much attention for New Mexico Lobos for Gene.  They play the Texas Aggies, so not much chance of winning but still....  LSU Tigers for Brandon, Tennessee Volunteers for Carolyn and the Texas State Bobcats for Larry and the  Texas Longhorns for the rest of us.  Hook 'em Horns!!  Geaux Tigers!  Woof, woof Lobos!  Etc......

Gene's Anniversary

Yes, Gene's anniversary.  He celebrates the anniversary of his 50th birthday.  Yesterday was his 32nd anniversary of his 50th birthday.  Happy Birthday Gene!

I tried to cook some of the lunch the day before.  I made a German chocolate cake, his favorite and then a pan of flan for those of us that are gluten free and don't like nuts (I can't imagine not liking nuts.).  I prepared the enchilada casserole and made red and green chile.  Yesterday was preparation of the beans, rice and fresh homemade flour tortillas.  We had a good time, ate too much and now it is time to recuperate.

Sort of recuperate.  Gene rode his trike this morning.  I didn't want to ride the stationary bike so went to one of the benches by the westerly pond and sketched.  Items on the Hunt were landscape and water view ( you know that would be on Joan's list).  Another reason to go to the bench to not sketch the same old views from the porch.

I took a bag with my sketchbook, watercolors and a drink.  Sat down, opened the sketchbook and no pen!  Therefore, these sketches are in direct watercolor.  The first one, water view is a bit on the pale side.  I managed more color in the landscape sketch.  These are in the Ohuhu mix media sketchbook with watercolor and waterbrushes.

On our Hunts, Ai from Thailand often puts photos of her world and holds her sketches in front of them.  I decided to try that.  She hasn't posted on her blog in ages but you can see her great artwork there.  http://aiarts.blogspot.com/

 

The water in this water view photo seems to have more blue.  It is so dry and some invasive water weeds are making the water a reddish brown.

 

This landscape view is back toward our house.  The big tree is the one I sketch from the porch and our house is behind it.

Our nightcaps a margarita for me and cabernet for Gene.  He was showing off his new t-shirt referring to him falling down a lot.  It says "I'm not clumsy.  Its just the floor hates me.  The tables and chairs are bullies and the wall gets in the way!"  That's about the truth of the matter.  He is lucky he hasn't broken anything, but his exercise keeps his bones strong I guess.

 This was after our trace of rain the other day, so beautiful.  We can sure use some more rain!  It seems we are sharing the heat, though.  Most of you are steaming today as well.  There was some rain in our old hometown yesterday.  Super!!

Yard Tool Sketch for Hunt 67

I sketched at the doctor's yesterday.  I heard a mower outside and looked but the mower guy was too fast.  There were two other workers, one with a blower and this one with a weed eater of some sort.  I had a little more time for that.  They were pretty speedy though.

Sketching in the Dark

It is still dark and gloomy, so I sketched at the dining table to have light.  We have lots of windows, but still dark.  Sure happy we bought this house.

Sketched in the ArtStreet sketchbook with a Micron 02 and added colored pencil.  The fabric is so much more brilliant but would take lots of time to "color".

Weather was always so important at the ranch.  Life depends on the rain so we checked every day.  In New Mexico when it rained we always got in the car to go see how much and where it rained.  My dad could tell from the color of the muddy water and how fast it was going where and how much.  

We have had a little over 4.5 inches in the last couple of days.  That will help the wildflowers and our ponds for the fish, frogs, turtles and other wildlife that use the water.

From one Hunt to Another Sketches

The time has slipped away, there is already a new Hunt.  Yikes!

Today is the crossover day from Hunt 53 to Hunt 54.  I sketched for both.  We were in Austin for checkup on Gene's eyes and both our hearts.  All is well and that is good.

I took the Ohuhu book and a Micron 03 pen so my sketching could be quicker with a little heavier size on the pen nib.  These are 2 sketches to a page, 8.5 x 11 inches.

Holly Time Watercolor Sketch

I couldn't believe we could sit on the porch this morning.  A week ago it was 20 degrees F.  This morning it is 70 degrees.  I sketched in the Ohuhu sketchbook, mix media so I could add watercolor.  I used the Micron 02 to draw and then added watercolor with a waterbrush.

Number 5 holly - it is youpon which I think is a type of holly.  The female bush has red berries, but there are none near this house.  We had a lot at the other house.  Hmmm.  I might have been happier with a more reddish purple in the background but ......

Here is a photo to see how it really looks.  The plant is pretty invasive around here and burns like kerosene so we keep it cut away from the house.  We have only one big youpon in the yard now.

There were some fishermen out by the lakes/ponds.  Pretty far away for a good photo but you get the idea.  The water is still so low.  It should be about halfway up the bank.

It wasn't supposed to rain today until about 4 o'clock.  Gene went on his trike and he just got home and it is sprinkling and wet.  Murphy's Law I guess.  At least he didn't get soaked with his computer and phone.

We will go to Paige to the post office in a bit.  Mailing the cookies and a few calendars to family.  Much easier to go to the post office there.  We can eat at the Roadhouse, too (not to be confused with the Texas Roadhouse).  Another plus for going that direction.  There is a Roadhouse here in Bastrop but it is smaller and crowded.  Same good food and service.

Sketching is something I do when I should be doing something else.  Is that the procrastinator in me ... or guilt. My friend Lou, bag blog, sent me this she saw on facebook.    "I used to just crastinate, but I got so good, I went pro."  Fits us both so well doesn't it??

I was having fun playing in the dust the last few days so I set up a still life on the 26th to sketch in pastel. Then my lazy side kicked in and I decided it would be much faster to just sketch in pen and get on with my day.  What did I have to do that was urgent?  I can't think of anything.  I was slightly interested in the baseball College World Series.  Ole Miss won.  They had never been to Omaha so that was nice, since Texas couldn't be there.  Oklahoma was in the finals with them.  Oklahoma is rival in the Big 12.  Made it hard to root for the Big 12 so I didn't choose a team.  Ha.

For Scavenger Hunt from Life 29, sketched in the 9 x 12 regular paper Canson sketchbook with a Micron 02 pen.  There was a challenge to put 3 or more items in a sketch.
Number 5, metal - a flask
Number 6, plastic - red cup under flask
Number 7, glass - the double sided glass
Number 8, made of wood - pencil box
Number 9, ceramic - a blue garlic jar

And yesterday, no sketch.  I wonder why.  We didn't do much around here.  It rained some in the afternoon setting up a beautiful morning on the porch for today's sketches.  These are on a page in the same book with a Micron 02.

Number 10, wedding related - a thank you for a wedding gift from Chuck and Libby and a thank you for a baby shower gift from Emily and Zach.  Both cards came Monday.  Nice.

Number 11, something carved or made by hand - small wine cups from Peru.  Originally terracotta colored and now grungy with gunk on them after being re-fired in 2011.  There is a piece of old, old wood in the top cup, from what?  Why is it saved?  Hmmmm.
