Christmas Sketching

Scavenger Hunt 524 had quite a few Christmas and December holiday items on the list.

I sketched in the big book with a Micron 01 and a bit of watercolor.  That book doesn't take water very well so kept it small.

Number 2, Related to decorating - lights and ornaments on the tree
Number 3, Related to Christmas - part of the small nativity from Jerusalem, carved wooden items are about 3 inches tall for the standing men.

We were discussing poinsettias on wetcanvas and I remembered the poinsettia trees in Bolivia.  The plaza in Cochabamba had huge trees, they must have been 50 feet tall.  We hadn't noticed until we went once when the leaves were red.  Beautiful.  My photos are all lost.  I found this on TripAdvisor by Regis_SP (Oct 2016).  You can see a bit of red leaves at the very top of the trees.  I had always thought poinsettias were a flower pot plant.  A few years ago they were selling some in pots that were about 6 feet tall with the branches all woven together.  Haven't seen many this year at all.  Of course I haven't been out shopping much either.

We had a nice day yesterday.  Mike, friend from Houston, came to lunch and so did Joanna.  We had some great steaks and cod, sort of like Thanksgiving!  Gene grilled some pineapple for desert.  He did a good job on the cooking.

My plant growing ability is pretty much nil. But I can keep a poinsettia alive. In fact, I had several still living through the summer, but left them outside to freeze recently. A friend of mine gave me some sort of plant from her yard. Inside the pot she gave also had some sort of poinsettia type plant. I had them growing every where they were not suppose to grow. I didn't know they would make a tree. How interesting!

Bag Blog, maybe the poinsettias are not dead after freezing. It used to get pretty cold in Cochabamba. We had one in the yard in Lima, Peru, that got about 20 feet tall, it didn't turn red while we lived in the house. It was very leafy, though. Pretty.

Jennifer Rose, the trees were beautiful when leafed out. Don't remember when it was....

I think we are just used to seeing small poinsettia plants here. My plein air group goes to the Bayport Flower House every year as our last outing for the year. They have an amazing greenhouse filled with poinsettias, including some trees. Of course they aren't 50 feet tall, but the branches are twined together and the colorful leaves make a beautiful display. It must be gorgeous to see them out in nature that way.

Joan, thanks. We hadn't really noticed the big trees until we saw them all decked out in red. I like the poinsettias you are talking about, haven't seen them here this year.
