Asparagus, Good or Bad

Do you like asparagus?  I disliked it as a little kid.  My mom used to get it in a can once in a while.  In high school that changed.   I went to stay with my dad at the ranch.  There was an artesian water well there.  A company came out and drilled for oil back in the 30s or 40s,  They hit the water and never found oil.  The water was brackish and they tried to cap the well.  They couldn't do it so the water is still flowing as far as I know.

My grandparents planted an orchard and had a garden every year.  Asparagus was a veggie they tried.  It took hold and still grows wild.  It grows along the banks of the Rio Grande.  My dad always said it was started by my Grandmother.  Who am I to argue?

My dad and I would get up in the mornings have steak and biscuits and gravy. Dad would put on a roast and we would go work the cattle.  In the early afternoon we would stop by the Artesian Well and pick some asparagus.  It grew so fast.  We would cut it off at ground level and come back in a few days and there it was about 8 - 10 inches tall.  Sooooo good fresh.  We would cook a whole pot and eat roast, potatoes, asparagus, sour dough biscuits and drink a pitcher or two of iced tea.  Then back to work until dark and have cereal or snack for dinner and go to bed.  Get up and do it all over the next day.  Good memories .... hard work.

The end result is now I really like asparagus.  We had some yesterday for Father's Day.  Gene cooked his famous brisket served with baked potatoes, corn on the cob, asparagus, grilled pineapple, and fresh flour tortillas.  Peach/blueberry cobbler with Bluebell Homemade Vanilla ice cream and  Joanna's chocolate chip cookies for dessert.

I sketched the asparagus for the "A" on the Scavenger Hunt 637 list.

In the big book with Micron 02 and colored pencils.

It was great to have our Texas adult kiddos out for the day!  Super nice.

Trying to get on with life and not be afraid to live.  With the help of our police officers we should be OK.  Respect and responsibility are my words of the day.  Thanks to all the police, military and first responders.  The give their lives for us every day.  Give them a thanks when you see them.

I love your description of working on the ranch and eating pot roast and fresh veggies. I can almost taste the food and feel the NM sun and blue sky. Makes me homesick.

Your Father's Day with Gene and kids sounds just pretty wonderful, too. I don't mind our quarantine until I do. Ha! Staying home is not bad, but now and then there is something that would have been fun to do and we cannot do it. Dang it. We have been eating our share of ice cream, though.

Bag Blog, it was always work all day at the ranch, but what a life. Would like to be there now. The meals when they were branding or gathering in the fall were amazing. All fresh and from scratch. Yowza!
Ice cream does help on the staying at home and a glass of wine doesn't hurt. I even made a tequila tonic the other night.

Jennifer Rose, thank you so much. I like to eat the tender part raw with dip. I'm nuts.
