Sketching in the Big Book

The Southwest and Western challenge has my photos this month and a couple of snow photos from Jenna and Hud.  You can still join us and try your hand at painting or sketching some of them.

This is a old train parked at a museum in Canada.  Can't think of the town at the moment.  It was in British Colombia between Kaslo and Slocum as I recall.  It was pretty much a ghost town.  I sketched with a Micron 01 and a Prismacolor Brush pen, as is the sketch below.  This was done directly and quickly.

On the same page in the big book for Scavenger Hunt 576.

Number 3, darkness - I was trying to show the opening from my studio into the dark living room/entry area this morning.  Not very successful, but on the bottom half of the page with the train.  Sigh....

Yesterday when I went to the Tough Cookie with the Bastrop Plein Air Painters, I took a photo of my lunch.  It was a peanut soup and the avocado mash on toast.  Yummmmmy.  I was going to sketch it instead but was out of time.  Too much yakking.

Then, a bird story for you.  For the past couple of weeks there have been a couple of Eastern Blue Birds that have been enamored of their reflection in the dining room window.  They hit the window pretty hard but haven't committed suicide.  It doesn't bother me .. don't care if they do.  But Gene has been looking for a solution.  We saw some feathers in the yard day before yesterday and thought our hawk or neighbor's cat may have solved the problem.

No such luck.  I remembered hearing about using an owl to scare away the birds.  Gene went to Lowe's and got a Great Horned Owl Natural Enemy Scarecrow.  You can see in the photo how successful the owl was.

The bird just uses it as a perch to look at its reflection and decide where to go from there.  Peck, peck, peck........

let the windows get dirty ;)

Jennifer Rose, that seems to be the solution. Our son said he had an owl but it had a bobbing head and seemed to keep the birds off of his porch. May try that!

yeah something that moves unpredictability should work

Jennifer Rose, Gene ordered something, we shall see. :-)

I hear a fake snake could scare away birds. We have a fake owl that did nothing. Our problem is they get up under the patio roof and poop on the patio and the furniture there. I'm not a bird fan. I kind of like the meadow larks that follow the chicken coop around the yard and eat the leftover chicken feed.

Bag Blog, We heard about the snake as well. We ordered a bobble head owl, see how that goes. David had one and it worked well on the porch. The bird messes are the worst! I used to clean the chicken pen when I was a kid ... I don't eat chicken! Ha.
