Delapitated Plein Air Pastel

Wednesday, Bastrop Plein Air day.  We met up at the Tough Cookie original location at the Crossing.  Excellent.  Vegetarian, gluten free, great coffee, art on the walls, what more can you ask?

I intended to sketch/paint the old windmill and truck or the Colorado River and Old Iron Bridge.  As I was checking which view to use I found this old fountain in disrepair.  The shadows and light caught my eye.

Number 1, delapitated - this fountain was up against a deck/walkway in pieces.  It was full of rain water and junk ..  no fish or clean water.

I used a variety of pastels on a new piece of Colourfix dark rust colored sanded paper.  12 x 9 inches.  It is a bit darker than it shows here.  I forget that when you paint outside it is good to paint a couple of shades lighter for when it comes back inside.  I take the photos in direct sun and it is about how it looked when I painted but not how it looks without a light on it.  So beware, plein air painters.  Lighten up!

Thanks, Jennifer Rose, the light and shadows did catch my eye. I should have sat on a bench to paint for a better angle. Anyway, it is a sketch and will be wiped now that I have a photo. :-)

That is not your usual bright painting, but the darks and lights are great.

Bag Blog, yes, painting outside can fool me. I really need to remind myself that the light makes it seem darker when you bring the painting inside. I'm always attracted by light.
