Pastel Painting, Saguaros

I painted with pastels yesterday. I have a frame with a mat for putting in three 5 x 7 inch paintings. This frame was put aside to do saguaro paintings in it for my show in Magdalena, New Mexico, in July.

The way the mat is made it is much easier to cut the paper to fit the frame and mark the area to be seen through the mat. Prevents sliding around and the tape coming loose after framing.

The paintings without the mat.

Three of a Kind
Three pastels, 5 x 7 inches each

A snapshot of the paintings with the mat over them to give you an idea of the final framed version. It was late evening so the shadow from the mat is large on the tops of the images. I will try to get a better photo with the paintings and frame today, without the glass.

I also taped a video of this painting which I hope to get edited and on line before the baseball game tonight.

Jo,

Three of a Kind is really nice...I actually like the unmatted version...intriguing to see the scene emerge from the edge and disappear into the edge.

I like that sort of vignette idea, too. I don't think it would go over too well in my small hometown, but you never know. Ha. They always look interesting to me before framing. I will show more that way, what do you think?

I don't know if it would sell or not. If the edges were lined up and not smudged (so as to make clear it was intentional and not just a "I ran out of time" thing) I think it could work. But, you know the market better than I do. :D

I think the idea is especially intriguing if the subject matter is all related...several perspectives on a known landmark or something.

I agree with Rose - it is pretty cool with or without the mat. I like to see things "emerge" from the paper like that - you go, cacti queen!

Rose, I think you are right. I'm pretty sure if I tried it on purpose, I would mess it up!

Regina, thank you, too. Like I said, it wasn't on purpose, just to fit the mat. :)

Jo: I like the outdoor feeling of cactus.

I love the vignette idea, but I think the matted version would sell better. The darker mat just does something to bring out the color.

What fun and wonderful paintings. While I really like the unmatted version, I am not sure the average art collector is ready for it. These three little paintings are gems, however they are framed.

Jo - I love these!! I like the unmatted versions too, but I'm impressed with the idea of how you did them all on one page so they would work better in the frame. So ligical...but I never would have thought of it!

fishing guy, thanks. It is fun to do these little quick paintings.

Bag Blog, thanks. I'm pretty sure it will do better in our little town.

Miki, appreciate your nice comments.

Joan, thank you. I always look for the easy way. A little more paper but saves on tape. Ha.
