Juried Show Entries - Pastel Paintings

The time has arrived to post about my entries in the Annual Juried Member Exhibition of the Austin Pastel Society. You can follow the link to view a slideshow of all the entries. There are some great artists in our group and they are sharing and energetic.

I entered three paintings in the exhibit. We will find out by February 15 which pieces are accepted for the show. Desmond O'Hagan is the juror and will be in Austin to give a workshop and see the accepted paintings at the Corridor of Art for the final decision on awards. He will be giving a three day workshop at the Windberg Art Center for APS members. The Windberg Center is wonderful. I wish all towns could have such a great place for learning.

There were over one hundred entries and about fifty to sixty will be selected. All are judged with digital photos. This would be hard for me. The paintings all look the same size more or less in photos. The color varies on monitors, etc. The past judges have done well in their selections. Some paintings that didn't make it in one show will win a prize in another. The result is one judge's opinion at one time.

You never know, so you enter and hope for the best. It was even hard for me to decide what to enter. The categories were Landscape, Portrait and Figures, Animal and Wildlife, and Still Life. Some of my paintings don't fit a category, like Boot Scootin'. Is it a Portrait/Figure if it is just feet? Not a Still life either?

We will all find out in a few days, won't we?

These pastel pieces are beautiful! I especially like "Reaching for the Sky" - it makes me think of the time I spent living in Tucson.

Hbedrosian, yes, those are from near Tucson. I combined a couple of photos from that area. Thank you so much.

Everyone has an opinion and each judge is different. You never know what will be chosen. I think all your pieces are worthy. And if inspiration was a factor, you are a great inspiration for us lazy artists.

Great entries Jo. Good luck. I need to think about joining the Austin Pastel Society.

Bag Blog, thank you. That comes from "do what I say, not what I do". I'm one of the best at being a lazy artist and procrastinating! :)

Teresa, thank you for saying that.

Karen, thank you. It is easy to join now, you can join on-line at www.austinpastelsociety.org
Hope to see you there!

Thanks for the link to that wonderful slideshow!!! Good luck with your work...I think my favorite is the Saguaro Cacti, but the first one and the one of the market are super too!

Very nice, Jo. I'm partial to La Paz, Bolivia, Market because I like paintings unlike any I've seen before...and it's nicely done.

I guess abstract and conceptual art are ruled out of your competition.

I'd call Boot Scootin (love that name) a "figure." Just my 2 cents.

Joan, thank you so much. You know how to boost my ego. :)

Kellie, thank you, too. You have a great blog. Thanks for stopping by.

Rose, thank you, I know you aren't feeling up to par. Thanks for coming by.

Nancy, Thanks. I love Bolivia, we lived there about ten years. So I have to paint something every once in a while.

There are a few abstracts in the show this time, they are just in these categories. Don't know how that will work. I guess in the beginning there were no abstract painters. They may have to have a new category next year!

We have some great portrait artists so didn't have the spunk to put in Bood Scootin' with those. Another place maybe. :)

Jo: They are all beautiful and the cactus one is very special.

Thank you, fishing guy. It does seem that the Saguaros are the favorite. I like them, too. :)
