Pastel Painting Day

This was a very "artful" day. I started painting late, a little after lunch, and made some real progress. I started a 12 x 12 inch painting for the show "12 Buy 12" (info in sidebar). I have to have 3 or 4 done for delivery by November 21 or 22nd. Austin Art Space is accepting entries on the 29th as well, but I would like to have mine there early.

Today, I started a pastel on Pastelbord. This will be in my "Footwork" series. I have two done in the past, both pastels. He Dances and She Dances, footwork from the powwow in Austin.

This is the under painting sketch for "Texas Two Step" and I will post the painting as soon as I finish. It just lacks the final touches.

I also sketched for the Southwest forum on wetcanvas.com. To encourage participation we started a challenge . I sketched the blue door in pen and ink and this evening I did the same in pastels. I will call it a pastel sketch as I did it on practice paper, pastel card that I have painted on before and wiped off. The last practice painting I painted on this paper was the Bob Ross look alike.

The Blue Door

This is pastel on Colourfix pastel card, 9 x 12 inches. Done in about 45 minutes. I am preparing to do a large painting of this subject and was working out the composition and colors. It could use less wall to the right I think and the door should be the focus. At the moment the wall is much brighter on the right, so it pulls attention from the door. I prefer some sage or other plants instead of the iris plants. We shall see. Hmmm.

Maybe you could just make the irises purple or something? :) Nice sketch, regardless!

Hi Joanna, thanks and good idea. You and I didn't notice the leaning door. A friend on wetcanvas noticed. Hmmm. I think the paper was on the board crooked and I painted the vertical parallel to the board instead of the paper. It is however a practice sketch. The wall looks rough and lumpy .. all the old pastel and the paper is loosing some tooth after 3 or 4 paintings. :)
