Per Gene's comment .. he was right about the bushes, I nearly finished the painting and was sort of happy with it. Then realized how right he was and wiped it off and had another go at it. I am taking the final photo today, now that the sun is out and will post the photos as I went along.... Hopefully you will agree that it is now a better painting. :)

This is the start of what I am working on. I have advanced quite a bit. I started with an under painting of pastel softened with water. I will post the progress in one post as a demo when I finish.

This looks great so far. Are you using regular pastel on this? I never knew you could wet them. (I guess you can really do anything you want.) I'll be back to see more.
Joan, I use pastel and spread it around with water or alcohol. It covers the paper or surface quickly and saves on pastel. You can use a darker color or a compliment and let it show through. Just another technique.

It looks better in the picture than in real life, the chamise looks like the burning bushes in the Bible if there is such a thing, but they are gone now so I should quit beating a dead horse.
