Plein Air Sketching

Finally a sketch from somewhere other than the porch!  It is good to get out and have a latté and some sketching.  I didn't have time to call around and get a sketching buddy so went on my own to the Tough Cookie Bakery.  https://www.toughcookiebakery.com/   They have vegetarian, vegan and gluten free items.  Very good.  Excellent quiche and more.  See my snack below my sketches.

Number 5 below my feet - the yard and old car at the Crossing from the deck of the Tough Cookie.  Done in the travel sketchbook with a new Sharpie pen.

Number 6 in front of my eyes - the streamers and paper flowers for a birthday.  It may be an anniversary of the bakery, I forgot to ask.

And my snack an AWT (a waste of time - latté that is decaf and low flat, no cream or flavors) and avocado toast on pretzel bread.  You can see it has pistachios on top.  So yummy.

The day before I sketched at the dining table in the big book with the Sharpie pen.  The Sharpie has a bit bigger nib than the Micron 02 so is faster.
Number 2, sticky - cinnamon sucker from the Sugar Shack
Number 3, sweet - Hershey's Kisses and Nuggets
Number 4, tastes wonderful - snack size Snickers, my favorite candy

After sketching yesterday,  I headed to get groceries at my H.E.B.  They are promising to have someone roasting New Mexico Green chile on Saturday.  I hope they do.  We roasted some on the grill for David, but it is so much easier for them to roast it.  We will still have to peel it and put it in the freezer.  So good to eat all year, though.  Worth the effort.

You can read and see Gene and his mom peeling chile in 2008 here:

Well, there you have it.  Another day, another dollar.  A million days, a million dollars.  This was a saying from my mom, guess it was popular when wages were a dollar a day.

Glad you got out to sketch in a different location....wish I could have joined you. It looks like a fun place to sketch from. It was interesting to see the photos of Gene and his mom here and on the post in the link. I never thought about peeling so many peppers and how it would be done. Must be tasty!

Joan, thanks. It would be so good to sketch with you again. We could have a margarita or two. :-) The chile smells so wonderful when roasting. A smoked peppery smell and yummy to eat. There is no flavor like it. I used to make "pretend" chile in South America. I would roast bell peppers and the local hot pepper, locoto. It would be OK, but NM chile has a very definite flavor and you can get it in different "heats" from mild to XXX hot. I'm about a medium hot eater. Gene is hot and his brother goes for the hottest he can get. You can roast jalapeños, too but still not so flavorful.

Thanks, Jennifer Rose. Avocado is great. It has a short perfect use time. ;-)

We have not gotten any peppers this year. Sigh. I guess we will use our 505 chile peppers. This time of year I think about being with you in Angel Fire, buying green chiles in Taos and having them for breakfast. Yum!

I recognized Gene and his mother in this photo, but I thought it couldn't be Gene's mother, because she has been gone for a while and Gene looks like he always looks. I guess Gene doesn't age.

Bag Blog, sorry you haven't had the chance to smell the chile. We bought a box of supposedly roasted chile at HEB. Got home with it and they had just warmed it up and not roasted. We had to get out the grill and roast it again just like from scratch. Oh well, enjoyed the wonderful smell and it peeled easily.

Gene's mom didn't age either, she would look the same I'm sure. Of course she would be 105!
