A challenge on Scavenger Hunt 662 is to sketch a hand every day. I didn't include my hand in the first sketch. We have sketched hands many times on the Hunts. It is very good practice.
Number 7 tool, Number 8 pliers, Number 9 used to cut
You can see that my thumb if flattened out when I put a little pressure on it. That is one of the reasons I couldn't play the ukulele. I can't push down without flattening out my fingers so they cover two strings instead of one. I had advice to practice enough to get callouses on my fingers so I won't have the problem. I'm just not that dedicated. :-)
Practice. Hmmm. Art needs practice as well. Sometimes I apply the practice and learning and have very nice sketches. Sometimes I just make marks to say I did a sketch, not a very successful way to practice.
When drawing like my sketch today my plan is to look and then put my line. I started at the top of the chisel and drew down to where the pliers cross over the handle. Then I worked on the pliers, down to my hand on the left and the cutter on the right. I looked at where the tip of the pliers was in relation to the chisel and my thumb to start the pliers. I got the angle on the cutter a bit wrong, it was a bit more upright. That made my fingers under my thumb wrong. I should have left them out. Maybe I moved my hand and didn't notice. If I had done a pencil sketch of my arrangement first, I could have fixed that. I'm not for do overs. It is what it is.
Sketching practice would include more views of the same items. I try not to do that in the coffee table book. Maybe I should now that I'm getting closer to the end.
How do you work/sketch? I imagine some might do the whole outline first? Start with the thumb and work back? I was working back to front. I don't think there is a wrong way. You should use the plan that works best for you. Today I will work front to back and see what happens. Practice should help either plan.
Sketching helps in painting. You use the process of looking/seeing and then putting down a stroke. As you progress you work with memory and the strokes get easier. Daily painting is very important. I'm forgetting my process by not painting. I haven't lost all my skills yet, but it is harder to paint when you have to relearn the process. I need some painting rehab.
I need to paint for the Southwest Forum Monthly Challenge. I will paint instead of sketch and start the rehab program. Here goes......

It's actually a great sketch. Who knew you were such a good tool drawer. I don't really think much about how I start and compose a drawing. Sometimes that gets me in trouble.
Bag Blog, you are so right. I usually just plow in as well. Holding things or having someone else holding or posing gets tricky as we always move ... even when asleep. I have tried sketching Jennie's dogs asleep and they move their legs and change everything!
