This rooster and hens is from a photo I posted for the Southwest August Challenge on wetcanvas. I debated about using pastels or a plain ink sketch or watercolor. Watercolor was the easiest at the time.

I rearranged the chickens and tried to not be too fussy. I'm not sure where I took the photo. Maybe in Kentucky. The rooster looks like the protected chickens in Bastrop that I have painted before. I'm sure this is not in Bastrop. They have done away with the chicken sanctuary but you still see one now and then.
I sketched the scene first with a Zig Millinnium 05 (blue) pen. I'm still using the watercolors to fill in rather than paint. I did do some loose painting on the ground part. I also see some drips that I didn't notice before I scanned the painting. It is in a Canson watercolor sketchbook, this is trimmed to about 12 x 9 inches.
I mentioned on wetcanvas that I do not particularly like chickens or watercolors ..... so......
I am an artist that paints in pastels, with some oils, and acrylics. I sketch in pen and ink. As an artist my original paintings are influenced from living in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Bolivia, Peru and Chile, and travels throughout much of Canada and all our fifty States. This is my spot for posting paintings and sketches, to muse mostly about art, life and a little about UT Baseball.

I love this painting of the roosters, Jo. Definitely a winner. My friend has a kitchen full of chickens and roosters in every form...paintings, statues, and tablecloths. They are very popular.
This makes me happy. :-)
Thanks, hmuxo. Chickens/roosters are very popular. I have always sold any I painted. The colorful roosters are the most fun to paint. My son said this one looked ready to play hopscotch on the stones.
Joanna, thank you. I like making you happy!
hens I like, Rooster can be a....PITA
very colourful rooster :)
Jennifer Rose, yep, roosters can be mean, too. I had a pet Rooster as a kid, he would come when you called him and ride on your shoulder like a parrot. Crazy.
I had a friend who had one that was more like a dog thsn a rooster lol
I like your chickens and that rooster. Nice job on the feathers!
Jennifer Rose, better dog like than chicken like. LOL
Joan, thanks so much. Happy you are home safely.
