Sketching to Music

We had a musical last few days.  Saturday we went to the Rohan Meadery between La Grange, Round Top and Giddings.  Devin Jake and the Buffalo Gals were performing from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

The band was at the west end of a pavilion.  They were brightly backlit even though it was pretty cloudy.

My sketch in the travel sketchbook which is 7 x 10 inches.  Prismacolor fine line markers, mostly the brush tip.

It was a fun afternoon.  We met Joanna there.  We had some mead and wine and enjoyed the great music.  They have a food truck with homemade pizza.  We did not try it, but the other visitors said it was very good.

This was how we saw the band from our table in the middle of the area.

And the players:  Rebecca Padek, Melissa Carper and Devin Jake.  Rebecca and Melissa perform as the Buffalo Gals and live in Eureka, Arkansas.  Devin is in Austin.  He grew up with his mother loving Dolly Parton and singing all her songs, so Devin does too.  They performed some other contry and blue grass songs along with their original songs.  Fun to hear the old songs that I know all the words to.

There were many chickens, ducks and a guinea hen running around.  This rooster had feathers down over his feet, very regal looking.

But, I really have to backtrack to Wednesday.  That started the whole musical week.  We skipped the Wednesday baseball game and went to Lockhart, Texas, to hear and see the Carper Family.  We really like them.  Melissa Carper (upright bass),  Beth Chrisman (fiddle) and  and Jenn Miori (guitar).  They performed in Austin mostly since 2009.  We saw them on the Prairie Home Companion show in Dallas.  Melissa went back to Arkansas a while back so we don't get to see them very often.  When we do get a chance we have to go.  https://www.carperfamilyband.com/  Beautiful harmonies and music.  We met Joanna for the show there from 8 to 10:30.  Super.

You can hear and see snippets of their performance on Joanna's Instagram account.

You can always hear the Austin bands on Joanna's Instagram.  All the ones I mention here and many more.  She takes in as much live music as possible so you can check it all out.

Then Saturday was the Empty Bowl Project soup day.  It was held at the convention center this year.  About 20 local restaurants serve samples of their soups. You pick a handmade bowl with your entry fee.  Fun to choose a special bowl.  It is nice to see all the support from the community and visit with old friends.  There is a live auction.  We "won" one of Enid Woods paintings.  How nice is that?  We pick it up today, I will give you a peek at it.

Have fun and enjoy the music...

I love the back-lit musicians.
We once had a couple of roosters with feathers on their feet. I thought they looked like they were wearing pajamas.
My ceramics class is making bowls this weekend for Empt Bowls

Sounds like a fun musical few days...with sketching too. I'm jealous! I'll have to look for some music here.

Thanks, Lou. Pajamas is good. :-) Also looks a bit like a mascot. Ha.

Joan, thank you. Live music and supporting the musicians is great!

Jennifer Rose, thank you. I had never seen a rooster like that.

Sorry to answer so late. We had company!
