Coffee at the Dairy Queen Sketch

Yesterday morning was beautiful out the window!  We took off for a walk around the lake and it was a bit cool and windy.  I took the travel sketchbook.  I needed to stop once in a while.  First time all the way around since the surgery.

For Scavenger Hunt 491 http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1425125

I used the Micron 01 and added some colored pencil back at the house.

Number 1, wet - the edge of the lake with wet grass and dirt/mud.
Number 2, wood - the caretake pulled out this log from the water and cut it.  I imagine it will be gone soon.
Number 3, vegetable - a stretch to vegetation with this thistle plant.  They are about 1.5 feet tall and have a very soft and fluffy white interior.
Number 4, token - these Dairy Queen tokens have a story .. of course.

It all started with a goofy joke that Gene sent out to his e-mail friends.   In Texas, especially in small towns, the folks gather at the Dairy Queen in the mornings for coffee and local news.  His story went that he was at the Dairy Queen and one of his friends was approaching his 50th anniversary and was wondering what to do for his wife.  He asked one, a bit of a tightwad, and he said he and his wife just went to MacDonald's for a sit down dinner because she didn't really want anything special. The first guy said he might take his wife to the coast here in Texas.  "What did you do for yours, Gene?"  Gene replied, "You know, we are from New Mexico so on our 25th anniversary I took Jo to Albuquerque.  I decided for our 50th to just go get her and bring her back!"

One of his friends in Alaska then sent him these Dairy Queen tokens.  He told Gene that since he went to the Dairy Queen often, the manager just might accept these antique tokens for a treat or two.  Our friends owned the Dairy Queen in Kotzebue, Alaska, for many years.  It was the only one above the Arctic Circle.  They used to give out the tokens for cones, coffee, Buster Bars and small sundaes.  They are wooden chips.  Very cool.  We haven't tried redeeming any yet.  Well, Gene doesn't hang out at the Dairy Queen in real life .......

Last night we made it out to dinner at Baxters.  They have reopened for lunch and dinner.  It was good to get out. The service was not good, all new help.  It is so hard in small town restaurants to keep help.  Anyone good goes to Austin to a fancy restaurant for big tips.   I'm still on soft foods for a while, but did well.

Hopefully we can go to baseball this weekend.  The Longhorns play Oklahoma.  Hook 'em Horns!!

I wonder if it difficult to sell ice cream in Alaska where it tends to be cooler.

If UT is playing OU, I hope UT wins. If it is OSU, then I will have to cheer for OSU. I hope you get to see a game soon.

Bag Blog, They said that Dairy Queen was very popular. They were one of the first DQs to have big posters of the items as the folks could just point to what they wanted.

You can root for UT. It is the Sooners in town. UT won the first game. 5-2. See how it goes today!
