Pastel on the Rocks and Photos

We took off on Tuesday with the plan of going to the City of Rocks where I would paint.  Gene would ride his trike from Hurley, about 19 miles and meet me there.

We left the house three times I think and later than we planned.  We forgot things and just piddled away the time.  By the time we left, about 12:30 p.m., it was sprinkling.  We drove on and it really rained by Hurley.  We decided to go to the State Park anyway and look around and plan for another day.

It quit raining by the time we got there.  Gene hiked around a bit and I took out my pastels.  I painted about an hour before it started to rain.  I painted on a piece of used paper that was torn, so painted on the good part.

My set up

You can see how big the rocks are.  It is the City of Rocks State Park if you care to look it up.  The rocks are out on the flats with nothing around.  They think they plopped down there from some volcanic explosion.  Strange but beautiful place.

From in between some of the rocks.

A few more shots, you can see where they have made nice picnic areas with grills and tables.  You can hike all in between the rocks and off into the distance on marked trails.  They have campsites and hook ups for trailers, bathrooms.

I think I forgot to post a photo of the Ladrones near Magdalena.  I post one every time we go by.  This would have been when we were coming to Silver City.

We go through Deming when we go to the dentist in Palomas.  It is not much of a town, out on the flats.  It is on Interstate 10 but has beautiful mountains in sight.

They do have an art center and it has been open every year since 2006 that we have been here, so they do have a good art community.

I liked this motel sign.  It may entice you to stay there in Deming.

There had been a big rain in the morning when we went to the dentist yesterday.  Pretty for photos.

The water was standing all around.  I guess the ground was soaked.  We were sprinkled on as we walked across the border.  We bought umbrellas in Silver City before we left, just in case.  It rained more while we were in the dentists, but had stopped by the time we left.

We ate at Maria's Italian Grill in Deming on the way home again.  It was very good.  Maybe we will eat at the Pink Store next week.  That was an old tradition.

I've never been to the City of Rocks, but it looks like an interesting place. Your painting is fun too. If the sun had been shining, it would have made for some great shadows. Maybe on your next trip, you will have sun.

Bag Blog, a lack of drama in the photos and painting for sure. It is so odd how the huge boulders are just "there".

Love the photos of the City of Rocks, especially the one of the boulder stuck between the two bigger ones. Great landscape and nice painting. How hit us it there?

Joan, thank you. There are so many balanced rocks and odd piles. It has been mostly in the 70s here. A bit warmer down at the City of Rocks, some 1500 feet or so lower in altitude. It gets up in the 90s in mid summer, but is dry, so you can get in the shade and be cool. Also another 20 minutes you can get up another 2000 ft at Pinos Altos in the pine trees.

Jennifer Rose , thanks. It is a fun and interesting place.
