Pastel Sunset and Basket Sketches

My niece, Carolyn, and I made a pact a long, long time ago.   She would make me a basket and I would paint a sunset for her.  She made me a beautiful egg basket a few years ago.   I have procrastinated on painting her sunset much longer than I care to admit.

While I was putting up the entries on the Austin Pastel Society show a couple of weeks ago, I thought about what to paint to enter the contest.  Hmmm.  I had a couple of beautiful sky photos of Magdalena Mountain where we grew up.  That would be perfect for Carolyn.  I painted in pastels and entered it.  It wasn't selected for the show so I can now show it to you and also send it to Carolyn as I planned.  Finally!!

I sketched the egg basket a few times.  It is so special.  She wrote about it as well.  She made baskets from local ivy and honeysuckle.  My basket was her first numbered and signed basket made from a kit in her learning experience in 1995.  That is so cool!

Here are a couple of my sketches of the basket.  They don't do it justice.

And the egg basket.  It is just beautiful, don't you agree?

Memories of days gone by are so special as I get older.  So, now you know the rest of the story, as Paul Harvey used to say.

My brother-in-law, Roger, sent me this link.  Amazing art.  I like the way the artist trims the finished piece, makes it even more three dimensional.

That sunset may be my new favorite of your paintings! I love the light. The basket is pretty cool too.

Joan, thank you. Pabst is a very interesting artist.

Bag Blog, thanks. I wonder if the baskets didn't have flat bottoms so the eggs didn't roll around? I'll have to ask Carolyn.

I love "trails end" Jo. Beautiful light. I've always wanted to work with Wallis paper...I think I would like to try. The egg basket is a winner as well!!!

Auntie Jo, your sunset painting is BEAUTIFUL!!! And I am so glad you are enjoying your egg basket!! Yes, the curved sides hold eggs in place perfectly and is ideal for transporting eggs.

The 3D art link from Roger is amazing, the paintings look so real!

hmuxo, Thank you so much. If you try Wallis beware if you use your fingers to blend. The surface will file off your fingerprints! It holds many layers!

Carolyn, hey there. Thank you, too! Hugs.

Love the painting and the basket.

And, that 3D stuff is pretty amazing. I'm fascinated by the fact that he worked on the glass while upside-down! Crazy.

Thanks, Joanna. That 3D art is pretty nifty and captivating.
