Blue can be a bit tricky as there are sooooo many variations in color and temperature. For shadows and to push something back in your painting, you usually use a cool blue. Warm blues for sunny skies. It really depends on the color around it and each painting.
The complement is orange. Orange mixed into blue dulls the blue toward gray. Put blue and orange beside eachother and the colors vibrate.
Here are a few blues that you can compare. Which look cool? The feel will change depending on what they are next to. On the white they look darker, on the black they look lighter and on the orange very intense.
This is my blue practice painting. I did it on a rust/orange Colourfix sanded paper (9 x 12) and you can see the color peeking through to add texture and interest to the blue.
I put "color" in my search box on the left and pulled up these posts about color, value and painting. A good review!

You can put Instruction or other key words and find more posts in the "how to" genre.
Tomorrow will be our GREEN lesson. I'll show you my practice after class. It is so good for me to get together with other artists. You should try it sometime.

The rust colored paper was a good choice with the blue study. I like it peeking through. Ben Konis always worked on darker paper like the tan colored Wallis paper. He had a technique of staining his paper if it were not already colored. I tried it with burnt sienna watercolor, but I think burnt umber would have been better.
Bag Blog, I usually use an under painting or staining on light colored paper. I like using colored backgrounds, too. Besides peeking through, it is less intimidating than a blank white canvas to me. :)
Makes one think huh Jo? I have done the shades of one color thing before too, kept some on my toes.
Fun exercise though..

Rae, there is always so much to think about when painting. I think good practice sometimes is just to paint and forget the plan. Some things work by instinct and repetition! Ha.
How have I missed so many of your posts??? I guess travel does that to me. You have a bit of everything...ordering problems, cows, lessons. Nice to catch up. Next I have to get over to WC and get the new list.
Joan, I have been away from WC as well. Where does the time go. Thanks for coming by. Will be fun to see sketches from your travels.
Love how different the blues look against the different backgrounds!
Joanna, color is about location, location as they say! Ha. It does make a difference what is around it.
