Reflecting on Memorial Day

I was looking for a way to "celebrate" Memorial Day.  I found this wonderful article about Richard Arvine Overton, the oldest veteran.  Thanks to the Austin-American Statesman and the city of Austin for the photo and Fox News for sharing the story by Joshua Rhett Miller.

I posted a poem about our fallen soldier's in 2010 and the Gainsville, Texas, World War II Memorial.

When we were growing up, the military touched so many of our lives.  My brother was in World War II in the invasion of Normandy and my sister-in-law's brother fought and died in Korea.  Many more uncles, cousins and friends.  Our country has grown so much, that now the volunteer military is such a small percentage of the population.  The youth of today have no conception, I think, of the debt we owe to our soldiers.  On a daily basis we give very little thought to the soldiers and families that stand up for us here and abroad.

I hope you have them all in your heart today and every day.  We need to thank them for our freedom.  We are so fortunate.  Thanks to all who served and are serving.

I hope your Memorial Day is great with plenty of family, friends and warm memories.

Thanks for the link to the article about Mr. Overton. He doesn't look a day over 70. :-)

Joanna, Mr. Overton is quite a man. I was impressed and thankful for a person like him.

I forgot to mention how wonderful it is that different organizations are funding and arranging trips for the few World War II soldiers, that are alive, to visit the new memorial in Washington, D.C. Thanks to those folks, too.
