Chicken and ... Tortilla Soup and Blue Window

Yesterday I sketched a chicken for wetcanvas.com, the Southwest Forum, June Monthly Challenge. This is pastel, 6 x 6 inches on Pastelbord. I will wipe it off and go with another painting, though, it was fun for practice. Thanks, Sandra, for the photo.

I went down yesterday and forgot my keys. I had to park about a block away and carry some heavy art books that I wanted to put in my studio. I thought, Gene's keys are in the pickup so started back to get them. Then I realized, I was in the Explorer. Gene was coming to town so he brought the keys. I had about an hour to wait so I read one of my art books, Helen Van Wyk's Favorite Color Recipes. She was an excellent teacher for color. I have some old tapes (VCR) from PBS shows with her programs and they are very instructive. It is good to refresh my brain once in a while.

I also finished up a small pastel for the New Mexico show in July. I painted it from the veggies I bought for a class.

Tortilla Soup
Pastel on Pastelbord, 7 x 5 inches

This will be at my show at Peppers in July. (Send me an e-mail for purchase information.) The painting is darker on the left in real life, more mysterious regarding the flowers.

I also got a photo of the Blue Window which is also for the New Mexico show.

Pastel on Pastelbord, 11 x 14 inches

This was fun to paint. I love how pottery and old walls look in pastels. Maybe that is because I love pottery.

Now off to the studio to paint.

I always love your NM paintings. I like the chicken too - he has a gleam in his eye - "Gallo del cielo." Do you know that song? I like the Joe Ely version best.

Bag Blog, thank you. The hen was fun to do. I hadn't heard that song. Pretty interesting. Joe Ely does seem to have the best version. You gave me a new song!

My sign in word verification was "mulaman" Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket.

Such a handsome rooster... a shame to "wipe" him off! :-)

The "Tortilla Soup" and "Blue Window" paintings are just beautiful. Wonderful job on the colors, shadows and composition. Two thumbs up, Jo!

Thanks, Teresa. Guess I need to go take photos of chickens. I just don't like to be around them. My job as a kid was to gather eggs and clean the coop. Yuck..... I still don't care for eggs and chicken.

I enjoy doing a still life, especially if they have tomatoes or apples. :) Oh, and geraniums. Red stuff!

Hey there, Rae. Thank you. I had never thought to do chickens until recently. Very interesting.

Hi Jo, I love all three of these. You didn't really wipe the chicken did you? No! I love him or her, lol. I have that book by Helen Van Wyk and really like it. She was a talented artist.

Hi, Barbara. I liked the chicken, too. It was a good practice, but the photo was by Sandra for a project on wetcanvas and I like to paint from life or use my own photos in case I do a masterpiece. Ha.

Hi Jo,

It's always a joy to get a visit from you on my blog.
These are really great works and I quite like the "Blue Window" one, in which you convey light in such pleasant way.
The painting also presents a convincing sense of depth through a good depiction of values.
Great work !

Kind regards,

José
