In a painting .. if you don't push them back, the painting looks flat, with no depth.
I would like you to look at some painting that use value and color to push back the background, even when it is actually close. Here are some that I like. Sorry I can't put the paintings here, we are going on a trip today and I don't have time to ask the painters.

We are off for Gene's birthday bike ride tomorrow. He is trying for 100 miles. We shall see if the weather cooperates in southern Colorado. Wish him luck!

Jo - landscape painting is popular, but that doesn't make it easy! I find it very intimidating - depth is very illusive, or at least it always is for me. I'm sure you'll work things out.
Rose, Gene says thanks. We arrived in Alamosa and it is nice but very cloudy. Supposed to be up to 76 tomorrow with slight chance of showers. We shall see.
Thanks, as I said I always learn from each painting. Far away mountains are much easier and what I am used to. Ha.

I always love your paintings Jo! I struggle with landscapes because I have a tendency to want to paint every detail. That just doesn't work in landscapes!

Kasie, thank you so much. Your detail sure works for your angels. :) Gene is getting ready. I will sketch and read, etc. Be standing by with water and goodies. The weather looks pretty good, maybe a bit cool in the early morning. Down to about 40 they say.
Jo - I love the clouds in your tall painting - good composition too! It's a challenge to not just see what is there, but to "tweak" it on paper / canvas to give the illusion. Great links, too. I especially liked the Marc Hanson one - definitely gives the feeling of depth!

I understand the green problem. It is amazing how many greens there can be in one picture. I think you did very well with your depth - cool to warm and such.
Regina, thank you, cloud lady! I do like Marc's work. Always a favorite. Gene took off, it is about 46 degrees now at 830 a.m. Whew.
