With regard to my last plein air painting and a little discussion of value and depth, here are a few things I know and attempts at using them. All the green here is a problem for me. Hopefully I will overcome that. If you look at the paintings together, that I have done here you will see I haven't made much progress in pushing back the mountains. One reason I am sure is that they are not far back in reality -- they are right here!
In a painting .. if you don't push them back, the painting looks flat, with no depth.
I would like you to look at some painting that use value and color to push back the background, even when it is actually close. Here are some that I like. Sorry I can't put the paintings here, we are going on a trip today and I don't have time to ask the painters.
See this by Richard McKinley.
Another by Wm. Scott Jennings.
And Marc Hanson
Michael McGuire
There are plenty others out there that I like and follow .. as you know. Who do you like for landscape painters? I will think on this some more and follow up.
We are off for Gene's birthday bike ride tomorrow. He is trying for 100 miles. We shall see if the weather cooperates in southern Colorado. Wish him luck!
Good luck Gene and Happy Birthday on August 26!!
Here is his birthday post last year showing him on his bicycle.
I am an artist that paints in pastels, with some oils, and acrylics. I sketch in pen and ink. As an artist my original paintings are influenced from living in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Bolivia, Peru and Chile, and travels throughout much of Canada and all our fifty States. This is my spot for posting paintings and sketches, to muse mostly about art, life and a little about UT Baseball.

Happy Birthday Gene! Hope it is a wonderful ride and beautiful day.
Jo - landscape painting is popular, but that doesn't make it easy! I find it very intimidating - depth is very illusive, or at least it always is for me. I'm sure you'll work things out.
Rose, Gene says thanks. We arrived in Alamosa and it is nice but very cloudy. Supposed to be up to 76 tomorrow with slight chance of showers. We shall see.
Thanks, as I said I always learn from each painting. Far away mountains are much easier and what I am used to. Ha.
Great pieces Jo. Great composition colors and energy.
I always love your paintings Jo! I struggle with landscapes because I have a tendency to want to paint every detail. That just doesn't work in landscapes!
I hope Gene has a great Birthday bike ride. What a fun thing to do! :)
Hey Donna, thank you. Hope it is a degree or two cooler in Austin, now.
Kasie, thank you so much. Your detail sure works for your angels. :) Gene is getting ready. I will sketch and read, etc. Be standing by with water and goodies. The weather looks pretty good, maybe a bit cool in the early morning. Down to about 40 they say.
Jo - I love the clouds in your tall painting - good composition too! It's a challenge to not just see what is there, but to "tweak" it on paper / canvas to give the illusion. Great links, too. I especially liked the Marc Hanson one - definitely gives the feeling of depth!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Gene. Enjoy your day!!
I understand the green problem. It is amazing how many greens there can be in one picture. I think you did very well with your depth - cool to warm and such.
Regina, thank you, cloud lady! I do like Marc's work. Always a favorite. Gene took off, it is about 46 degrees now at 830 a.m. Whew.
Bag Blog, thank you, too. Greens are tough. I like the desert! More colors. Ha.
You have done some beautiful painting. I always enjoy your landscape paintings.
I will now check out the links you gave us.
Hi Peggy, thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your time and comments. :)
Jo: Neat painting showing how you get the depth.
fishing guy, thanks for stopping by. Appreciate the sentiments. I've been looking at your blog, but not commenting much lately, sorry. Your photos are spectacular.
