Taking Photos of Pastel Paintings

I have mentioned before that I like to take photos of my pastel paintings in the sun. The difference in color shows up pretty well in the photos I took today of the Arches painting. I took them within the time space of two or three minutes. The clouds were blowing over the sun, well creating shadows and .. in my yard, you know it takes a quick hand to get the sun photos, even without clouds.

Here are the three close together to compare. The first photo was taken in shade, the second with a flash and the third in the sun.

I did not make any corrections in the color on the camera or the computer. The third is much closer in color to the actual painting. It saves time in the end and looks better to take my photos in the sun.

It looks better in real life, maybe because you don't look at it up close. I will include a thumbnail for that reason as well.

I changed the shadowed butte from my original posting. I thought it was too dark and colorless for the look of the piece. I hope you like it better. I won't be changing anything else, right? It isn't framed, so you never know.

Thanks for doing this post. I did not truly appreciate the big difference between sunlight and flash until I saw it.
I really like this painting.

The sunlight ON your art brings out the sunlight WITHIN your art!
I agree the third one is the best. Absolutely awesome!

What a difference a bit of sun makes!!!!

Hi Joan, it might work for watercolors, too. Doesn't work for oils or acrylics when they are shiny. Too many reflections. Nice to "see" you!

Miki, it sure makes a difference in my photos. Thank you so much.

Hi Jan, Thank you, too. Sunshine makes a difference for sure. You can adjust them in a photo program, but it is never the same.

Nice painting.
That looks like Red Rock country to me.
Check out my alternative blog at www.marewheeee.blogspot.com/ to see our recent Sedona Hot Air balloon ride! It was our first visit to Sedona and wow. I want to go and take a class at the Sedona Arts School.

Mary, it does look like Sedona. The formations there include the natural bridges. They both are amazing places.

Jo, this is just beautiful! BTW, I still can't get color correct photos 90% of the time...

Hi Rhonda, I have a daughter and son that do photographs, I need more tutoring. They put a true gray piece in the photo and you set your colors to that somehow. Maybe I can get Larry to help me do a blog on that. Hmmm. Thanks for stopping by.
