Political Thoughts ... Sort of

As a patriotic person, I hope you get out and vote for what you believe in. Here is a list of statements sometimes attributed to Abraham Lincoln that may help you in your decision about who to vote for.

* You cannot help the poor, by destroying the rich.
* You cannot strengthen the weak , by weakening the strong.
* You cannot bring about prosperity, by discouraging thrift.
* You cannot lift the wage earner up, by pulling the wage payer down.
* You cannot further the brotherhood of man, by inciting class hatred.
* You cannot build character and courage, by taking away men's initiative and independence.
* You cannot help men permanently, by doing for them what they could and should, do for themselves.

They were actually said by William J. H. Boetcker (1873-1962)
  • You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
  • You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
  • You cannot help little men by tearing down big men.
  • You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
  • You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
  • You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money.
  • You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
  • You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.
  • You cannot build character and courage by destroying men's initiative and independence.
  • And you cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they can and should do for themselves.
I would add another one of his sayings to the list:
  • What a different world this would be if people would listen to those who know more and not merely try to get something from those who have more.

Those are some wise words.

I can totally agree with each working for their own. It is a great American ideal.
But when Exxon Mobile posts the highest quarterly ever, I kinda wish they had left some of the rest of us with some extra.

And if you read the wiki, about Boetcker, seems his words have been twisted around by the best of them.

Bag Blog, Wish we could all abide by them, huh?

Leslie, I understand that Exxon paid more taxes last year than the bottom half of tax payers, some 65,000,000 humble tax payers put together. They paid 41%, near $30 billion.

So they paid their share, I think.

Just chiming in to say that when ExxonMobil (and the rest of their ilk) do well, my IRA and 403B also do well. That works for me as I contemplate retirement somewhere down the road. The better those folks do, the easier it will be for me to actually retire. Particularly since Social Security and my publicly funded pension fund may well not be around by then.

Hi Joanna, I'm with you. Hoping for a good retirement for you and all working bodies! Hugs.
