Last Baseball Post

Well, the last baseball post ....for the year. You can read about the Regional on Joanna's blog. She will keep up with the rest of the College World Series for you. You can also read about the Longhorns efforts on the official page.

The weather in Houston was very hot.

Our seats were in the second row in the sun. We were so tired from the sun, I can't imagine how miserable the team was. Anyway, the first game at 2:00 p.m. last Sunday went well. The Longhorns won over St. John's, 4 - 3. Such excitement and a great game. Russell Moldenhauer, the left fielder, flew out in the 8th inning and hurt his knee and had to be helped off the field. Not good. Kyle Lusson replaced him and made a couple of great plays. St. John's had two on in the bottom of the ninth with two outs. Chance Ruffin pitched to end the game, the Horns walked a batter to load the bases and the last batter grounded out to the shortstop for a 6-4 fielders choice!! Whew!
Augie coming out to start things off for themeeting with the umpires.

Riley Boening started for Texas.
The handshakes with St. John's

On to face Rice. The Horns would have to beat them twice for the championship.

The second game started at 6:00 p.m. against the Rice Owls. In the second inning, Preston Clark, third base, fell and hurt his knee on a catch and was out for the rest of the game. He will have to have surgery it seems. Sorry to hear that, Preston is such a team leader and great player. The game was very interesting with Texas using many pitchers and Rice using many different batters in the designated hitters spot in the line up. Rice had 6 errors as you will see on the scoreboard and still managed to out hit Texas and win the game. Sad day for the Longhorns. Too long of a hot day I suppose.

Kyle Russell hit his 57th career home run to tie the game in the 3rd. inning. Yippee!

The sad score at the end.

Handshakes and lining up to sing "The Eyes of Texas".

Kyle Russell was named the most outstanding player of the tournament, and also out fielder. Preston Clark made all tournament third baseman, Chance Ruffin as one of the pitchers and Michael Torres as the designated hitter. Nice for them and all the Horns.

Maybe next year! We will look forward to going to the games again. Texas always has a good team and most of us just take it for granted that the Horns are going to the College World Series. Other teams are always up to play Texas. If they can beat the Longhorns, that makes their season! That seems to be true of all the sports teams at the University of Texas.

That's a very nice skyline photo. Taken, clearly, as you were barreling down the highway. As usual!

Joanna, we probably weren't barreling quite as fast as we weren't as sure of our exits. Ha. Houston is amazing and soooooo huge. We were 11 miles out and still in the city, our hotel listed as downtown. You can see in some of the other photos huge buildings around Rice University. It is in the Museum and Hospital section of town. Lots of trees and old homes, pretty.
