Up your price and sell more, hmmmm?

Clint Watson's (FineArtViews.com) newsletter made me smile today. The title is "Does Expensive Art Just Look Better?" Check out the comparison to good, uh, expensive wine. There is some evidence that the price affects the view. His regular newsletter points to many articles by other artists and gallery owners, but he writes some good advice of his own.

What do you think? Which painting below do you like better? Surely the second one! :)

Loop 150 Sunset
Pastel 9 x 12, $175.00

Loop 150 Sunset
Pastel 9 x 12 inches, $1,500.00

Leslie, Guess I am due for a big price increase! Nice to "see" you. I think of you when I cross the street .. walking. :)

I read that article too. I was actually just talking with my husband about it.

I'm with Joanna, I always like a deal and see little difference in the beauty of the two paintings.LOL

Higher price - more likely to sell? Interesting! I have so many paintings laying around that I have more of the "garage sale" theory.

Joanna, tee hee.

fishing guy, you have a point. I'm always saving money myself!

bag blog, you have to watch the garage sale theory. Seriously, I hesitate to sell any bargains, I think it undervalues what has already been sold and then those people won't be too happy.

Art, like most luxury objects, are valued more - rightly or wrongly - if people pay for them. We've all grown up in a culture where money is equated to status, prestige and presence. Paintings are no different.

It amuses me how the art 'critics' often base quality on pricing. I've seen some very good pieces for sale for next to nothing and some very bad pieces priced outrageously.

Art is seen as an investment, the same as property, which hopefully should incrawe in value over time as the artists career grows.

Its all subjective and there are an element of the public who will buy from a particular artist, no matter what the quality or the price.

Hi Jeanette, Good points. I am always amused/interested in what makes people buy something, including myself. I'm always buying something on sale and say I saved $$. Of course, if I hadn't bought it I would have saved more. :)

The art "elite" are crazy about prices and critiquing as you say.

It is always interesting what sells of my own art. You just never know, but if it isn't out there it will never sell.

Are you frozen? It was 55 degrees F today and we were so cold in the wind. Of course it was 80F yesterday. Ha.
