I have been trying to decide what to post for Thanksgiving and went to check out what I posted last year. I am pleased with the message so here it is again. Happy Thanksgiving to all!
My Dad's first paying job was as a cook on a cattle drive. I used a photo of his campfire for the fire in this painting and the cook could be a little like my Dad, Dutch. I don't think he ever cooked a turkey in his dutch ovens, but he sure did make a fine meal. Sour dough biscuits, potatoes, steak and cooked apples or some fruit. Beans and chili, too. Makes my mouth water. My parents always cooked Thanksgiving and invited whomever happened to be on their own in town. We always had a houseful of people on that day. There were Salty Dogs to drink while they cooked, music and fun. Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday. My Mom, Alice, made rolls, pies, dressing, sweet potatoes, and more. Dad cooked the turkey and gravy.
There is so much to be thankful for. Family, friends, our freedom and country. Remember all our military that are eating MREs while we eat turkey and the police and firemen that are on duty. Thanks to all. God bless America!

I do like the idea of painting one's heritage - I don't think we see nearly enough of this approach to painting.
Your childhood Thanksgivings sound absolutely wonderful - I hope the one today brings you equal contentment.
Thank you, Katherine. Thanksgiving has always been special. I guess it is more relaxed and just a time to be thankful and enjoy. We have always had a house full. In South America we always had anyone that was visiting in our home and all the singles or strays. Heh, heh. Great times.

Happy Thanksgiving Jo castillo and to all your family.
I will certainly convey all your Good Wishes, and Thanks to my son, Killaurin. He emailed on the 21st. It was just to me. He told me in October, His office was destroyed. No one hurt. They caught the persons responsible. The Iraqs caught them.
Killaurin is training His replacement so - Looking to a Christmas knock at the door.
Enjoy! This time with all your friends and family.
Maggies' blog is wonderful!

Jo, It's a lovely painting with a lovely story to go with it. It's a wonderful memory. Thanks for sharing it.
Jo-
Hope you had a happy Thanksgiving. It's my favorite holiday, bar none.
Your Dad sounds really cool..do you have some of his sourdough starter?
:)
Your work is beautiful and a pleasure to look at. Thank you.
Regards to Gene.
All My Best,
Ellen
Ellen, you are right about the holiday. I guess there is no pressure (except the cooking) to do anything but enjoy. We had ours today and it was wonderful.
No, I don't have any starter. I made some when we were in Bolivia, but haven't done it in the States. Now, I'm gluten free and with just two of us at home it would die.
My Dad was a character and my Mom was so calm and put up with all his nonsense. :)
You finished your pomegranates and they are beautiful.
Jo
Hi Joan, thanks. We had a great day. Hope you had a wonderful holiday.

Thank-you so much Jo! MREs are not that bad. Really! As a child, I ate many K rations. Seems, the government had a surplus and the soldiers were allow to have these extras to supplement their families food supply. I also, know the soldiers of WWII had a lot of hidden well, experiences. The Military for the "Sand Wars" has actually made every effort to make sure all the Soldiers received a hot meal. The outer perimeters were sent large pans of fresh cooked Thanksgiving Meal. However, it is never like Home!
If you ever have the chance to beg an MRE off of a soldier, Do so, and enjoy the improvement.
However, do not ever beg an Astronaut for the Niblet corn provision! You will regret the decision.

Sherrie, We did try MRE's in Bolivia. Nothing like home, however, you are right. Hopefully most troops now have a good hot meal. I just hope everyone thinks of them and remembers them.
