A still life challenge on the Hunt called to me. I like painting still life and I like painting still life with pastels. One of the items was a kitchen tool with the challenge of painting more than one. Perfect.
What to paint? How about the container with spoons, spatulas and ladles. What paper should I use? I decided to recycle the paper with the books sketch. While the paper dried I looked for the tools to sit on my shelf.
These usually sit on my kitchen counter.
I wiped off the UArt paper that had the books on it with a paper towel.
I then brushed on some alcohol and wiped it off again.

I played in the pastels while Gene rode his trike. I was surprised that I was still painting when he came back. I was in a zone! I worked on the sketch for a little over an hour.
I had to stop. We were going to Austin to my final check up for the teeth on my implants. The implant dentist, Steve Widner in Austin, gave himself and the dentist in Bastrop that did the teeth, Matthew Lassen at Spring Street Dental and A+. I think it was a good job, too. Both offices have happy workers, people that care about you and quick and efficient care. I have had horrible dental experiences in the past. I was so pleased with both offices. I may do it again!

I love this painting Jo, and was quite surprised as to how fresh and clean the subject is given the 'mess' that was on the paper when you started. Great work!! As for the dentist, I admire your courage. I too had bad experiences in the past but they've left a permanent impression on me, and now I just can't bring myself to even say the word "dentist", let alone visit one.
I'm always amazed by the highlights you get in the objects you do in pastel. That is something I find hard to do in watercolors.

I love the pastel still life. It is so you with the red and other bright colors, and it is very good. Probably should frame it.
John, I actually like working on an under painting, no white intimidating blank canvas. Thanks. I am with you on the dentist. This is the second dentist bunch I have found in all our years of moving around, etc. I've had so much dental work and this experience has me coming back.
Joan, sometimes I remember to use the complementary color, that helps. Like the highlights on red might have a touch of green. It was explained to me that our eyes don't focus on complementary colors but blend other colors so the complement keeps the eyes moving. I got red golf balls once so I could see them easier, but they would get lost in the green, my eyes would pass over them. I don't think they even make red balls anymore. The implant is amazing. Don't know if another year of waiting for the bone to grow where I need another is worth it. How many years do I have left?? Be 81 soon.
