I'm not sure why, but I feel that sketches should be quick studies for practice. The prompt was Scarlett in the one word book titles. You know I like red so decided to do a very quick pastel. I wiped off a piece of paper from another sketch I didn't finish, thus the brownish background on the blueish paper. I prefer to use a colored paper or a background of watercolors or pastels brushed around with water or alcohol. So this worked well.
Number 7, Scarlett - a mug from Marie's Italian Restaurant in Deming, New Mexico, and red lids from plastic ware. About a 15 minute sketch.
Pastels work best for me if I use a light touch. You can put several layers and come up with more colors by scumbling over a previous color. I scumbled a light blue to get the highlights on the cup. Of course the bright highlights are a blue white as well. A pale green would be good on the red but I didn't want to go searching, just used the pastels that were in my tray. The red pastels were there from geraniums or apples I imagine.
Colors are affected by what is around them. Richard McKinley calls it simultaneous contrast. Here is one post about that:

I use bright blue painters tape to tape my paper to my board sometimes. Not a great idea as it can affect how we see the colors and what colors we choose for the painting.

Love your Scarletts! The mug has a really nice shape to it. I've used the blue painters tape at times too. I like it because it is easy to remove.

Bag Blog, thank you, I like red! Ha, I hadn't thought of the DVDs for a long time. Guess I haven't needed them. You are painting more than me. Hang on to them until we get together and we can try a technique or so.
