Cottonwood or Not Sketch

One of towns on the Scavenger Hunt 694 list was Cottonwood.  We don't have any cottonwood trees near here that I know of so I sketched the big tree in the back.  It may be an elm tree but I am not sure.  It is very large, this sketch doesn't do it justice.

You can click on the image to see it a bit larger.

Number 2, Cottonwood - Inktense pencils for the color and Micron 02 pen.  There is not a great deal of color as you wet the Inktense to spread the color and the paper in the big coffee table book does not lend itself to water.

Nice job on the shape of the tree!! Like with most trees that are standing alone it is hard to tell the size without something to give it some reference as to the scale.

Jo we don't have cottenwoods here. Great job with the tree - like the color with the pen drawing. Hope you are having a good day. Take care and have a super weekend. Hugs!

Joan, thanks so much. Yes, hard to show scale. It is a big tree, hmmm.

Debbie, thank you. I think cottonwoods grow in dry country along stream beds. We have oak, Loblolly pines and cedar around here. There are many in New Mexico so have some in my NM paintings.

ashok, thanks. I like your abstractly horses. I love horses and cows.

Your tree has nice character and individuality, Jo. I also like the sketch of "Earth" from a recent post--seems sort of mysterious as well as satisfyingly earthy. Your list of sketchable town names in Texas is fun; I'll bet every state has a bunch of names that could lead to a sketch. Ir set my mind going on Florida town names--how about Spuds, Mayo, or Dogtown.

thanks Jo. Would love to see you try few horses

ashok, I like to draw horses and cows but am not around them as much anymore so don't have my own references. I should try anyway, but..... Thanks.

Mary, hi there! Thank you. It was fun making the Texas town list. I like your three Florida towns. Will have to see if Texas has a Spuds ... they should. Another in NM and TX is Socorro (help). Nice to have you stop by.

Cottonwood trees spring up around here any place that gets watered. We had some that sprang up in the septic lines. Toby pulled them up, because the roots will reek havoc with the lines. He stuck one in the ground in the front yard years ago and it is huge now. They grow fast. Hard on my allergies, though.

Bag Blog, you are right about the pesky roots. They are hard on allergies with the cottony stuff that comes out of the seed pods. We used to call the round pods tatones when we were kids. Before they opened the boys would blow the tatones out of tubes/straws and boy did they sting when they hit you.
