Leather Plastic Sketch and Thoughts

Paul Harvey's, The Rest of the Story, are timeless.  Yesterday I found another essay/article that is timeless as well.  You might not think it would be because it is about the atomic bomb.

On Living in an Atomic Age by C. S. Lewis

https://www.swordofthespirit.net/bulwark/april2020p7.htm

This little excerpt sort of says how I feel about the virus:

In other words, do not let us begin by exaggerating the novelty of our situation. Believe me, dear sir or madam, you and all whom you love were already sentenced to death before the atomic bomb was invented… It is perfectly ridiculous to go about whimpering and drawing long faces because the scientists have added one more chance of painful and premature death to a world which already bristled with such chances and in which death itself was not a chance at all, but a certainty.

The article is basically saying that we have to live our lives in a normal fashion .. we will all die of something.

I'm more concerned about an auto accident than dieing of the virus.  Even being struck by lightening is more probable.  We just have to use normal caution.  This thought brings me to Mike Rowe and his podcast, That's the Way I Heard It.  This episode talks about Safety Third.  Read it here:

https://mikerowe.com/2020/10/off-the-wall-safety-third/

We all depend on the safety rules and things put in place to keep us safe, like seat belts.  When we drop our personal responsibility, like washing our hands, we can get sick even though the "rules" are in place.  Rowe says it's like the most dangerous intersections have crosswalks with the walking man on the lights.  We train ourselves to depend on that, we see the guy walking and we walk ... we don't look anymore and pow we get run over.

At any rate we are trying to live and not be so afraid of life ... or death .. in general.  Plus the vaccine is on its way, thanks to Warp Speed.

Now back to art.  I sketched yesterday at the table, it was the last day of Scavenger Hunt 658 but I didn't get it posted last night.  The sketches are in the big book and done with a Micron 02 that was on its last leg and was tossed at the end of my sketch.  Scratchy lines for sure as the nib is worn off as well as being short on ink.

Number 8, leather - faux leather on the binocular bag.
Number 9, plastic - some little boxes for measuring food for eating healthy portions

Gene saw our resident deer, pretty far away, but fun to see.  They've been around almost every morning.

These are five doe.  We have a pretty buck that has been around as well, but he wasn't with them.

I have read some CS Lewis and his comments about living life. I don't want anyone to die, but I don't want to live in fear or miss out on seeing those that I love. Life is short as it is.

Those deer look like the herd that we came upon the other night. Toby was driving home from Wichita Falls. I saw the deer in the headlights an said, "Deer." He ignored me, so I said it much louder and with an exclamation mark. Fortunately we were on a small country road and not going fast. The deer all looked at us much as they are doing in your photo. Then they moseyed on.

The excerpt you pulled out is fantastic:

In other words, do not let us begin by exaggerating the novelty of our situation. Believe me, dear sir or madam, you and all whom you love were already sentenced to death before the atomic bomb was invented… It is perfectly ridiculous to go about whimpering and drawing long faces because the scientists have added one more chance of painful and premature death to a world which already bristled with such chances and in which death itself was not a chance at all, but a certainty.

And I'm with you being a Mike Rowe fan as well. I started a "Paul Harvey" like podcast as well and was excited to find Mike's.

I have been more careful with the virus and stay masked when I'm out. I can't stop living completely...or what is the point? I was good at sketching from my "mobile studio" before and have continued to do that...and it works well most of the time.

Joan, sounds good. Especially when you have to be careful for Jerry, too. We wear our masks when we go out, too. I love you sketching from your mobile studio. :-)

Bag Blog, people don't realize how much damage it can do to you and your car if you hit a deer, even a small one. I was reminding Larry the other night to watch for eyes.
Yes, everyone used to ask me about how I could be a policeman's wife, wasn't I always worried? I worried much more about car wrecks or a bad bicycle wreck. If you do your work well and you and the people around you are trained and take responsibility you are as safe as you can be. If we worried about all the possibilities we would never go out of the house! Or climb a ladder, or ........We live all we can!

Dan, thanks for stopping by. You couldn't put a live link in the comments. I was pleased to find your podcast, TracingThePath.com I will link to it again. We also subscribed. Fun and informative.

Mike Rowe is amazing. I found that he did an old Ted Talk that was very interesting, too.

I can't live my life normally or I wont have much of a life left to live. the virus has only changed how much we go out and having to wear a face covering, which I prob will still do even after everyone is vaccinated. I'm not living a fearful life, just a safe life for me. I dont feel like getting covid and prob ending up in hospital. I'm not doing much different that I was before this whole thing, besides saving money on gas by not going for rides

Jenifer Rose, I hear ya. We have to do the best for ourselves and what fits. I just feel sorry for the folks that are terrified of the virus and won't do anything at all. :-(
