When I saw "tomato or red" on the list I knew I would have to get out the pastels. I love painting red with pastels. I saw this piece of paper, not a very good color for tomatoes, but handy and available.
For Scavenger Hunt 640 You can click to see the sketch larger.
Number 6, tomato (or red) - a little bowl of cherry tomatoes ... and, yes, I ate the models.
The rough side of MeTeintes paper has a heavy grid. I usually use the smoother side. The paper color showing through does not allow for detail and in this case does not add anything to the sketch.
Waste not, want not. This piece of paper had another sketch on the other side. I did play in the dust for a bit. Just about a 30 minute sketch. Now the paper will be tossed, not a friendly color to use over again.
The blue bowl has bluebonnets on the inside. It was made by my artist friend, Lea Blue at Blue Donkey Pottery. Her link is in the column on the right. You can meet her at the Farmer's Market on Saturdays in Bastrop. She is a most wonderful person, like a daughter to me, when I see her. It hasn't been often lately and I miss her.

Beautiful pastel, Jo. When I paint a portrait, I usually use Canson mi-tientes paper ...always smooth side. However, many of my friends like the heavier grid because they feel they can add lots of layers.
I love the way you painted the cherry tomatoes....NICE work!!
So pretty. Happy Friday
hmuxo, thank you so much. I only had one big painting with the rough side that I liked. Canson sold the paper mounted at one time, but the rough side out so I didn't buy it again. You are wise to use it for portraits, Daniel Green does as well.
R's Rue, thank you. Happy Friday back at you.
Lovethe shine on the ceramic bowl and those vibrant tomatoes!
Joan, thank you. My teacher in La Paz, years ago said to paint the light. It has helped over time.
nicely done !
ashok, thank you. Red painting is fun!
Paint the light is probably the best advice ever. I love the red tomatoes. Our garden is not producing many tomatoes yet, but we get some from other people now and then. They usually have a green top and red bottom. Maybe I should paint them, but people would wonder what they were.
Bag Blog, ahhhh, fresh tomatoes. So different than store bought. Someone else told me never to paint an odd fruit or veggie with a blemish or weird shape because people would only see the blemish, so probably best not to paint the tomatoes half and half. Ha. It would be interesting to me.
