Kay's Blossom Pastel Sketch

Kay is hosting the Southwest and Western Forum Challenge this month on wetcanvas.
http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1477959&page=2

Sketching/painting from photos is not my favorite way to paint.  I do like calves though so I chose Kay's Hereford calf for the challenge.  You have heard my story that my mother always called the calves "Blossoms" as she could see their ears sticking up out in the pasture.

Kay's Blossom
Pastel on Pastelbord, 7 x 5 inches

I may soften some of the hairs a bit and take the ones off the end of his nose, didn't see those until I fixed the photo.  I will do that before I put this on my website.

As for the Trivia from the previous post:

The question with multiple choice answers:
Which of these cities is farthest south?
Rome
Moscow
New York City
Vienna

Here is the answer.  I was disappointed, I just knew Rome was the answer.

Considering that Italy is on the Mediterranean, you might find it surprising that Rome is farther north than New York City. Albeit, at 41.9° N, the Eternal City is only a little over a degree north of the Big Apple, which is at 40.7° N. As for the other two cities listed, they’re all well north of New York City, with Moscow at 55.7° N and Vienna at 48.2° N. Other international cities close to in line with New York City are Beijing, China, at 39.9° N and Madrid, Spain, at 41.9° N.

I did look up the distance from the North Pole and found a completely different answer.  This was on Duck Duck Go I think.

Guess the North Pole isn't north.

I love the painting as well as the title...Kay's Blossom. I always paint with the reference photo....I only wish I can paint plein aire. Maybe I should at least try it out.....

LOL I think they are wrong. Love the calf!!! Not a creature I've had much experience with IRL or working from photos. Nicely done!

hmuxo, nice to hear from you, thank you. Guess your surgery went well. Virtual hugs. To get the idea of plein air without going out, you can paint still life. You see so much more in the shadows, etc. You can paint pretend plein air through a window, too. :-)

Thanks, Joan. I always love calves. Soft and sweet.

I still think Rome is the answer. But I've been wrong before. I love the term Blossoms. And your little painting is great. I like the hair.

Bag Blog, thank you so much. Cattle are so neat. My mom named all the cows, too. The milk pen calves were always May or April or whatever month. We would be way out on the ranch someplace and she would say, "There's old Bossie." Fun memories.

Jennifer Rose, thank you so much. Fuzzy is good and the baby calves are so, so soft.
