Did you notice a gap in my posts from August 14 to 18? We had to make a trip to New Mexico. My drivers license expires in September. I was thinking I would get it done on line but I didn't bother to check before we left home. When we got our first mail here there was a letter from the DMV that I could not renew on-line or by mail this time. Rats!!! I checked the website which took a while to find the list of cities/towns that have a place to get your license. It was Dalhart, Texas, which is 3.5 hours from Angel Fire. OK, a day trip and we could meet my cousin Pat and his wife, Helen, for lunch as they live only an hour from Dalhart. Also our niece, Carolyn, from Tennessee was visiting her sister, Marikay, in Yeso, NM, so we decided to just make a drive by there on the way back to see the nieces. This would mean an overnight, but no big deal. Now to pick a day.
We decided the sooner the better and while Carolyn was in New Mexico. I had a hard time getting info of the hours the DMV is open in Dalhart. There are no phone numbers where you can talk to a person. We finally decided to go on Wednesday, August 15. We set up the trip with Pat and Helen and the nieces. Wednesday morning we set off for Dalhart about 6:15 a.m. as we lose an hour going to Texas Central Time.
We arrived in Dalhart about 11 and met up with Pat and Helen at the XIT Museum, found the office and I went in. "Where is the drivers license office?" "Oh, they only come to Dalhart on Tuesdays." Why that was not mentioned on the website is a good question, right?
The next closest place was Dumas, Texas. 40 more minutes on down the road. We could not call ahead and talk to a person. We had a nice lunch at the XIT Steakhouse and good visit with Pat and Helen and headed out. We arrived in Dumas, found the office and had my license renewed in about 10 minutes. The really sad part about the whole thing we found out is that in Texas you can renew your license any time two years prior to the expiration date. I thought it had to be in the month when it expired. I could have renewed it before we left home. Again, rats!!
We drove down some backroads to Yeso. A very nice drive. We usually stay in Ft. Sumner but there were no rooms in the inns. We stayed at a Travelodge in Vaughn, New Mexico. Which meant backtracking about 30 miles, but ...... We visited with the girls and Marikay's family on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning and left for home about 1:00 p.m. I think.
I had never been to Conchas Dam so we drove that way to see some country we hadn't seen before. It was a beautiful drive and we ended up in Las Vegas, NM, about 4 p.m. or so. We decided to spend the night at the old hotel on the plaza. No rooms so we settled for a Comfort Inn and dinner on the plaza.
As we got to the plaza, a new sign was going up on an old building, "Welcome to Roswell, New Mexico". What?? Roswell is 300 or so miles south. Ah, they were filming a movie. Why go to all the trouble to do it in Las Vegas instead of Roswell is a mystery. Roswell already has all the alien stuff including an alien museum.

Highlands University in Las Vegas, Gene went to school there in the 60s. One of the reasons we were going to spend the night at the plaza was that Mama Lucy ran the restaurant there. The dining halls at the university were closed on Sundays and Mama Lucy would fix big pots of chile, beans, potatoes, tortillas and feed the students in the kitchen for lunch and dinner for about 50 cents. They have a plaque to her and her husband on the main plaza. The restaurant is more modern food and not standard New Mexico fare so we opted to try another place. It was not very good either. Sigh....

I had to chuckle that the DMV office isn't open every day. Ours are open every day and most of the time you get to spend hours there to do anything. I haven't gotten to the new hunt list yet...too many other things going on lately.
Joan, Thank you! We were shocked that it wasn't open and then didn't have to wait in line when we got to Dumas. We would have waited in one of the large towns/cities. We are always outdoing ourselves.
What a great post Jo!!!! I agree with Joan...we have DMV offices everywhere here on Long Island BUT be prepared to spend your afternoon there...and when you finally get to see someone...you're missing info which takes you back home!!! Lol. I love your sketches especially the hammer and wonderful photos ...thanks for sharing.
hmuxo, thanks for coming by. I asked Gene for his claw hammer and he brought me about 4 hammers. He's helpful with my art and sketching.

always a fun date!"
We bought green chilis in Wichita Falls last week. I got them bagged and in the freezer. They are hot. I thought of you while bagging them up. Of course I think of you when I cut up chilis to make breakfast.
I use to watch the old Roswell show, the new one doesnt look that good. probably cheaper filming there rather than the real place. and by building it themselves they have more control over the look of things

Jennifer Rose, our daughter, Joanna, watched the old show, too. I never did. Hope it turns out well and I guess it brought some "dough" to Las Vegas.
