Pastel Landscape Sketch

You may know that we go to New Mexico in the summer to get out of the heat.  Joan Bohls talked me into (encouraged)  signing up for a paint out for 4 days in Red River and Questa just a couple of days after we arrive.  What was I thinking?  I haven't really painted for a year or more.  I need practice!!  I did go out to Joan's and paint with her class the other day.  This was the result:

Plein Air at 9E Ranch

has "landscape" on the list.

For practice I wiped off the painting above and used the same Colourfix sanded paper.  I stood on our porch and painted toward the more easterly lake.  You have seen this in some of my other sketches.  I sketched/painted for almost 2 hours.  Very warm out there, about 85 degrees F plus humidity to start.  This is the result:

Out Back Again, pastel on Colourfix, 9 x 12 inches

It is good to practice.  I have forgotten so many things, but with a bit of patience it will return.  Hopefully, as you know, patience is not one of my virtues.

A light touch with pastels is a great technique.  Now I have a hard time with that because I want to get the color or background, or highlight as quickly as possible.  Practice will push the idea back into my subconsious, right?

You will probably see more pastel practice here for that reason......

Oh, my about baseball.  The Longhorns won their Regional as I mentioned.  Fans and team expected to be off to Oxford, Mississippi, to play Ole Miss for the Super Regionals.  There was a big upset and Tennessee Tech won the Oxford Regional.  This means the Super Regional will be in Austin instead.  Wow!  We are ready for the games!!  (Horns must win two of three) The games are in the afternoon, it will be super hot temperature wise and energy wise!   Hopefully the Horns will win on Saturday and Sunday and be off to Omaha and the College World Series.  You can watch on ESPN2.

Hook 'em, Horns!

I think you did great on the Out Back Again. You created depth and have great light. Very nice. I think I should come do the paint out with you.
