Photo Sketching

I hadn't sketched for the Southwest and Western Art Forum for the May Challenge.  I'm not fond of painting or sketching from photos, they don't inspire me for some reason.  Maybe because I already have the photo??

From the photos that Sun Face posted for us, I chose this fellow leaning on a rail.  He has on a black coat and vest, red shirt, off white scarf and light tan pants.  Should have done it in pastels, right?  Anyway, I sketched with my pencil.  At first I was going to make an outline and then go over it with ink but for the sake of time, just getting a sketch done, I finished with the pencil.  He is a thin man with the bulky coat on so hard to get his gesture to look right.

Some hombre, photo provided by Sun Face on wetcanvas.  Pencil, full page in big book.

Another quick sketch in the big book 1/2 page for Scavenger Hunt 453

Number 2, frame - a dark wooden frame around a photo of a redish/pink flower I have hanging in my studio.

Do you sketch or paint from photos?  I do take lots of photos to paint from and rarely do it, even when I'm in a painting mood.  For plein air, I often take photos to remind me of a pretty sky or lighting or to get a building or well known location down correctly.  I'm not comfortable with that and it shows.

I'm actually going painting in the morning.  Hard to get going when you haven't been doing it.  I may go drink coffee, sit .... and take photos.

i paint/draw/sketch from photos more than anything, but mostly because I dont often have the animal to draw in front of me, but I do prefer drawing from life (or death if its a museum specimen)

I take photos but very rarely use them for painting. I'd rather just paint on location. I had to smile at your "non collection" of mugs in the post below. It is amazing how quickly they pile up. lol

I paint from photos all the time. I even go around snapping photos of things I like so that I have them for reference later. Even when I did the paint in the park, I took a pic first. I painted from the reality, but also from the photo since the light changed so much in just a couple of hours.

The man sketch is nice.

Jennifer Rose, life or death is a good one! Ha.

Joan, yep, our house is overflowing with "stuff". We said we wouldn't do that. Sigh....

Bag Blog, yep, photos are important for painting out. I do like using my own photos better as I can sort of remember what happened, not fond of using other's photos.
