Plein Air Pastel and Watercolor Sketch for the Hunt

I actually painted today!  (Wednesday, but posting this tomorrow in the morning.)  Gene went for a trike ride and took a nap so I had about 3 hours to play in the paint.  It was pretty windy to start so Gene napped and I did the watercolor sketch.  Then the wind died down and Gene rode and I set up the easel for pastel work.

Number 6, live animal - these two mules were hanging around yesterday and today.  As soon as I got my sketchbook, away they went!  I did them mostly from memory and thought they would be back for the color part.  Wrong, they came back about four hours later.

I sketched the idea in pencil, then put on the watercolor of the landscape part and added the ink near the end.  I put the mules in after the rest and added their color.

For your learning experience, I forgot to leave the white for the snow so the tops of the mountain was sky color so the snow is not high to the top of the mountain as it should be.  I should have penciled that in so I wouldn't forget.  The mule on the left has his ears touching the bottom of the bush which is confusing.  The other one lines up his back with the fence almost, again confusing.  It is just a sketch and not planned as well as should be.  I rarely do watercolor so I am pleased with that part.

Vista, Plein Air Pastel on Canson card, 6 x 8 inches.  I am pretty pleased with it.  It is right outside our room, the mules were off to the right.  They stood by the pond for a long time yesterday.   First pastel in ages and ages.  Yay!

I wonder what this rock and log thing was.  It looks a bit like a loading ramp that they had in Magdalena to load the old trains.  No tracks here, though.  Hmmm.

I'm glad you got to paint. The pastel is very nice. I always love your water. The watercolor is especially nice. You seem to have a new style - I like it!
