Hunt #373 Sketches, Photos Cimarron

I had a few minutes to do another sketch for Scavenger Hunt 373.  http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1359370  I managed to do nine out of the twenty-six sketches.  That is about average for me.  I sketched in the regular sketchbook on the page where I did the fruit, so it seemed like I should add color to match the other.  Ha.  I used the Micron 05 and colored pencil.

On September 2, we drove with Gene's brother and sister to the Palisades Sill which is between Angel Fire and Cimarron.  We actually went to Eagle Nest for breakfast and none of the three restaurants were open.  We decided to go to the Palisades and then on to Cimarron for breakfast, about 38 miles one way.  It is a beautiful drive so the distance wasn't too important.

We stopped at a convenience store and asked where to have breakfast.  Luckily there was a very nice restaurant at the St. James Hotel.  The food was good.  The hotel is historic and beautifully refurbished.   It has many antiques and original touches left in place.  We will have to go there next year for Gene's birthday.

This last photo is of the desk in the restaurant with the safe in the little room in the back.  Notice the gun rack is made of horse shoes and spurs.   There are bullet holes in the ceiling of the bar and is supposedly haunted.  The rooms are each decorated differently and dedicated to historic people, mostly crooks.  One room is called the Pat Garrett room, so guess we will have to ask for that one.  I really dislike that much of history seems to glorify the bad guys.  Sigh....  People are always asking if we went to Billy the Kid's grave.  I'm sure not staying in a room named for him.  Yuck.  At any rate, the hotel is beautiful and full of relics.

After breakfast we decided to drive a few more miles  ....  about seven ... to the Philmont Scout Ranch.  http://philmontscoutranch.org/

Part of the ranch from up on the mesa to the south.

 Some deer along the road.

Near the ranch.

We went back for dinner on September 4 and this was the sky on the way back to Angel Fire.

Our company is all gone now.  These two months have flown by, we must have been having fun!  A few more days and we begin the trek home.  Keep tuned in!

I always enjoyed the St. James. There was a hall where you could look into the rooms and there were photos of local cowboys. From your photos, things have changed a bit.

Bag Blog, the hall and rooms are open. Great to see. I just didn't post photos of that. Many, many photographs and stories from the area. Full of history!!
