Wow! Canyon Photos

Wow! There are no sufficient words to describe Grand Canyon and photos or paintings cannot do justice. We just missed the big plein air event by hours. Check Michael Chesley Johnson's blog for info about this event.

Maybe another time. Two days is not enough. No time for hiking in such a short visit. It is too huge and travel time around is long. We were exhausted and didn't have time to walk much.

Here are a few photos of our visit:

The first green area with wild flowers on our whole trip. Fire danger was just moderate. Hmmm.

Our first glimpse after we parked on the North Rim.

Gene stopping to take photos or use his binoculars. I couldn't walk where there are no " walls" on one side of me. We had stopped in Bryce Canyon and I did fairly well so thought I could do that, but didn't happen. Shucks.

Photo for Jen. We think they hailed from Denver!

It is still smokey around. Started in Colorado and we were in smoke most of the time. I would think it was OK and then it shows in the photos. :(

The highlight of the trip was a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon.

This is as we crossed the rim. You go from about 500 ft over the trees to 5,000 ft over the river with no actual altitude change.

The Colorado river. The blacker looking dirt near the bottom is the oldest of course.

More of the river bottom.

Wild life?? These deer in the village where it says not to feed the animals. Hmm.

We have seen a lot of deer on our trip. One coyote and one fox. Many interesting birds including a bald eagle.

Too many photos to pick from and these are not cleaned up. Some have to be straightened, etc.

More as we get time. Internet and phone service still scarce when we are in the middle of nowhere. We were in Winnemucca, Nevada, the other day. That is where Johnny Cash's song of "I've Been Everywhere" starts. I think we have been to most of them or very nearby. Ha.

Great photos, Jo and Gene! How exciting to be in a helicopter there. It's so beautiful - very memorable time!!

Thanks, Regina. We barely made it all the way around in two days. You need a while if you hike any at all. We pretty much just stopped at each view point. We have so much beauty in our country.
