Photos for the Day, Sketches

Interesting day we had.  We walked 9 holes of golf and decided to take our recycle stuff to Smithville and have lunch at the Back Door.  It is so interesting.  Chef Rob Remlinger cooks, is waiter, busser and greeter.  He offers a menu of about 4 gourmet items with a salad bar.  He is open for lunch Wednesday - Saturday and for dinner on Friday and Saturday.  In June he and his family go to Reno (I think) and return in September.  The prices are very low.  Our lunch with wine, coffee and dessert was $42 including tax and tip.  Just lunch for two would be about $16.

So we dropped off the recycle and came back to Bastrop. We shopped at Wally-World and came home.  Here is a little photo tour the restaurants along the ride and a couple more.

Recycle station.

Back Door Cafe, very old buildings in downtown Smithville, Texass.

Comfort Cafe around the corner.  We have not eaten there.  It was another cafe a few years ago and we ate there then.  Need to try it.

Sherry's a little ways down the street, haven't eaten there either.

Pockets Grill, moved from Main Street, haven't tried this location.  Pockets comes from billiard pockets.  Guess they still have the pool tables.

The Colorado River as you leave Smithville.

A new burger place on Highway 71 in Bastrop, haven't tried it either.

Cedar's Mediterranean Grill on Highway 71, a favorite spot for us to eat.

The Colorado River again in Bastrop, the bridge is the old iron bridge where we first had Art on The Bridge ages ago.
When we got back home I sketched in the Ultrecht sketchbook with the Faber-Castell PITT F pen and added a little colored pencil.  Freehand about thirty five minutes of relaxation.  These are for Scavenger Hunt #223.

Number 1, your thumb pointing at you - lower right and the challenge to sketch it pointing all the other directions and closed in the fingers.

Number 2, wrinkles - the wrinkles in my jeans and my t-shirt.  Thought of a self-portrait for the wrinkles but that is too scary.  Ha.
Then we watched the baseball game between the Texas Longhorns and the Texas Aggies.  They played in College Station so we watched on the internet.  Agonizing game, but the Longhorns won, so good in the end.  You can read about the games on the official page and on Joanna's Longhorn Baseball Page.  They play tomorrow and Saturday in Austin.  Longhorns need to win to win the Big 12 championship.  Hook 'em Horns!

That baseball game nearly killed me!

What did y'all eat?

Joanna, you are soooo right about the game. Whew!

I forgot to put our food down? Your Dad had chicken fried steak with buttermilk mashed potatoes and gravy with a fruit cup, how gourmet is that? I had corn crusted catfish, mixed veggies, fruit cup. We had the salad bar which always has pinto beans, too. Then for dessert your Dad had Jack Daniels Chocolate Pie and I had Creme Bruele. Both had coffee and cabernet. The other items on the menu yesterday were some sort of grilled chicken and something else I couldn't eat so don't remember. :( The portions are not huge, so no left overs and the reasonable prices.

All of the restaurants look like places we would stop for lunch but I'm afraid they are too far away from us ;^) Nice sketches too.

You guys are going to have to eat lots to try all of those places. I thought the thumbs was a sign for how good the food was.

Helen, we do like to eat at the local joints as opposed to the chains. You are a regular sketcher, too. Nice sketches. Love your watercolors. I put your blog on my reader so I can be in touch once in a while. Thanks.

Bag Blog, we do eat out a lot! I should copy a thumb and put by each one, you are right. Made me smile!

The thumb pointing at you is pretty cool!

Jesse, thanks. I didn't put ALL the wrinkles. Ha. Are you still off in dreamland? I will go check your blog and find out.
