There is always discussion going around about digital paintings. I don't think that if you manage a photo in Photoshop or some program that that is a painting. It is a photo that was manipulated. Some people have a great touch with that and it uses skill, but to me it isn't painting, is it? But here is a painter, Joe Watmough , painting plein air on his computer. He says he is developing his own brushes. Hmmm. Pretty neat, at any rate.

Here is a link to his blog, but it doesn't have the explanation or WIP (work in progress) as on wetcanvas.

Jo - such a good subject to discuss. I started working in drawing and painting when I was really young, and started doing art on the computer in 1989. While I think creating art from scratch on the computer or manipulating a photo is fun, and I enjoying seeing other people's digital images, I do not consider them "paintings". And when I have work in an art show, and someone else has images in the same show that they have done on a computer and printed on canvas - and they neglect to mention that they are digital computer manipulated images - this makes me think they are misleading the public. If you have an "undo" button while you work, and can print out one "original" after another, then it's not a painting.
Hi Regina, thanks for your thoughts. I am certainly against the folks that manipulate a photo and call it a watercolor. Ouch. I do enjoy actually creating on a computer, but it is so different than doing it with pastels or a brush. It is more than a step up from altering photos, though. It will be fun to see what other readers think, won't it? Hope we get more comments.
