Take me out to the ballgame..... Photos

Oh, my! What an interesting and exciting day. It is the NCAA Regional Playoffs to see who goes to the College World Series. You can read about all the teams on the NCAA page. Texas Longhorns hosted the Regional in Austin. I was so disappointed that they placed Texas and Texas State (where Larry went to college) in the same Regional. Only one team goes to the Super Regionals. Drat.

Today, the Texas State Bobcats played the Boston College Eagles and lost 8 - 7 in the first game. Texas State was ahead until the 9th inning. Boston College scored 6 runs in the top of the 9th and Texas State countered with 2 in the bottom, but didn't recover. Exciting end to the game.

I think this is Kane Holbrooks the first pitcher Texas State used today. He was a high kicker, don't you think? I bet he gets tired....

J. Spatola homered to bring in two others to start the scoring in the ninth for Boston College.

Paul Goldschmidt had a two run homer for Texas State in the bottom of the ninth, but not enough to comeback and win. Darn.

Preparing the field for the second game between the Texas Longhorns and the Army Black Knights.

Introducing the Longhorns.

Army coming to their dugout after the introductions.

Standing room only. Lots of folks outside and in the general admission section.

Extra buses and lifts for the extra folks to peek into the games.

Brandon Belt came to bat in the bottom of the first inning and was hit by a pitch. He went down and had lacerations to his ear and a slight concussion. They took him to the hospital right away. Last we heard he was coherent and would stay in the hospital overnight. Hopefully he can play again soon, maybe even tomorrow they said. Whew! Very scary.

Things got very interesting after that. Brandon plays first base and our back up first baseman is Preston Clark. Preston was being the Designated Hitter today so when he went in to first base this meant that the pitcher would have to bat. That was Cole Green today.

Travis Tucker got on base with a walk, so Cole's at bat required him to bunt. And bunt he did, perfectly executed and moved Travis to second base. The crowd went bananas.

When Cole next came to bat, he was the lead off batter so had to hit. And... hit he did. A single. Again the crowd erupted in cheers. Too bad he didn't get to steal a base or score .. I'm sure with all the adrenalin flowing he could have done it. The last out was a long fly ball so he at least got to run to second and third! Three outs though and he came back to pitch. He pitched seven great innings. Surely he was the player of the game!

Michael Torres batted after Cole and you see Cole on first base. It was such fun.

Austin Wood pitched the eighth and ninth inning. He had three strikeouts and the last batter struck out swinging! Horns Win!! 3 - 1

Handshakes all around. The Black Knights were great. They will play Texas State tomorrow and the Longhorns will play Boston College. Go, Horns, Go!!

You can read all about it and see some great photos on Joanna's Longhorn Baseball page.

Funny how you caught the pitcher in mid kick.

Jo, have you ever considered painting baseball related art? Like Sharon Crute and her horse racing art because you are every bit as passionate about BB

Hi Jeanne, I like those high kickers. They could be Rockettes, eh? Long weekend, no phone or internet either!

Nancy, that is an interesting idea. If I used the team colors and people there would be all kinds of copyright problems. Guess it could be any team.. Thanks. I'll think on it. :)

Nancy, I meant to mention that I looked at Sharon Crute's work. It is great! I have a new blog to look at... :)
