Apple Heaven, Pastel Painting

I opened the door to my studio this morning to a heavenly smell .... apples! In a previous post, Small Seascape and Fishing Guy Home, I mentioned that several artists had had "wipe off days". Carol Marine said in her post of February 3, that when she has a day like that, it is a good idea to fall back and paint something you know. She painted apples that day and so did I. After reading her post, then I knew why I painted apples that day.

Then when I looked at Regina Burchett's post about the blahs on the same day, she had painted trees and shadows. Trees and shadows appear to be Regina's fall back item.

I am still not ready to paint anything else so I did another apple painting. And, yesterday, I started another. I have six apples in my studio that I have skewered for my composition and the smell was superb! I will post that painting, soon. In the meantime.......

Red, White and Blue
Pastel sketch on Pastelbord, 5 x 7 inches

I worked on this on Valentine's day. It is probably a little bit too red, white and blue, but I love those colors and this can always sit in my kitchen somewhere. It is not really a finished painting. I had a great time with it. The purpose was served, to push me on to do a "real painting".

Maybe if I go get to work, I will finish the skewered apples (five skewered and one not) and you will see how it all turned out.

So pretty and so amazing that you have all that detail and depth in that bouquet of daisies on such a petite format.

I really like this piece, Jo - sweet and petite. The blue glass is so pretty!

Thanks, Valerie. I've been smelling them all afternoon, I'm going to have to go see if there are more in the fridge, I can't eat these yet!

Sheila, thank you. It was fun to do something ... just for fun.

Regina, thank you. I like to paint glass, I just don't have a steady hand for those ellipses. :)

Jo: Certainly a colorful painting and how can you go wrong with our national colors. Thanks so much for sharing your work.

One of my students showed up at art after not painting for about a year. She painted a picture of a pair of high-heel shoes and knocked them out in one setting. They were great, and she was so encouraged. So many times my students choose subjects that they really do not like, but they want to paint something for someone else. They become discouraged. Nothing is wrong with trying to paint something new and different, but sometimes it is good to just let 'er rip on something you love.

I love your apples especially the ones a few posts back - apples on the serape' - just gorgeous.

My word verification "hyperpen"

Bag Blog, guess you better get your "hyperpen" in gear! So true about painting. When you are interested and excited about something it is much easier. I can't imagine artists that do commissions all the time. I know there is a challenge there so maybe that is part of the excitement. I prefer to just paint. And like you say, it just flows when things are right!

Enjoyed this post.. and your reader's comments. Hadn't thought about painting a familiar, comforting subject to get one out of the painting doldrums. Good idea!

Love the fresh colors in your painting!

Teresa, thanks. Good ideas, you are right. I think doing something quick with no real goal is good, too. Sort of like sketching.
