Susan Paints Live and Portrait Sketch

We had a great time on Sunday afternoon. Susan Carlin did a portrait demo with palette knife live on Ustream. You can see some of the demo there. It was a little like being there in her home as we could comment and she would answer while she painted. Such a talented lady. Gene watched, too. Joanna was watching in Texas and also Regina so we had fun.

Not only did she do one portrait demo, but did three. She must have been exhausted. We could all get up and go get a drink and take a break and she kept painting. This post shows her photo models and this post has the results.

Susan inspires us. Someone new to me that watched along with us was Barbara Pask. She tried a palette portrait after watching. While watching Susan sketch and begin the last portrait, I sketched the image of Kim as well. See the photo model post above. I tried my normal sketching with a pen with no erasing or pre-drawing with pencil, just plain old freehand. I sketched in a sketchbook with a Pilot ball point pen. Gene encouraged me to post it so here it is.

I never sketch or paint portraits so I guess this isn't too bad. There is some resemblance to Kim. The paper is 7 x 10 inches. Maybe I will practice some and take up the challenge to try a portrait or two.

I started a pastel painting on Sunday afternoon as well. I will post a WIP (work in progress) when I get it done. I am painting some blooms on a cholla cactus to add to the series of cactus I have been doing. They are a beautiful flower and bright fuchsia.

You did well Jo, you should try some more portraits! They are tricky, particularly with no erasing.

Thank you, Rose. I know you have done some nice portraits. Maybe I will do more. It takes work and dedication and that is a problem sometimes. Ha.

Well, how did I miss all these sweet words about me until now?!
Thank you, Jo! I'm so pleased you gave portrait sketching a go, too. I can certainly see Kim in your sketch. In ink, no less- Good for you!

Hi Susan, it is easy to give compliments to a great portrait artist and one that inspires. You make it look so easy. It is certainly not easy. Hmmm.

Thanks for the return compliment. :)
