Commission in Acrylic, Yapa in Pastel

The commission of the entrance gate is finished. I delivered it this afternoon and the purchaser liked the finish. It had a few interesting aspects. The gate and fence are wrought iron with rock pillars. This required an adjustment to get it to fit and look right on an 11 x 14 inch board. I could have made the fence smaller and farther away, but that would have made it so small. I chose instead to make the posts larger and squeeze the perspective a little bit. Not a lot, but enough to give a better feel for the entrance in this size frame. It could be made a longer panoramic view, but that would be a different painting and maybe not show so much of the trees and sky. It is evening and the lights are on on the gate. It is finished with Lascoux Fixative. I like the end result. (You can click images for a larger view.)

I usually give a small gift and send a thank you when someone buys a painting. I delivered it all in one package today. I decided to give a small painting as the "yapa". This is a custom in Bolivia and other parts of South America. When a person buys something in the markets, you are given a gift as a thank you. It goes to the smallest things. For example, I would buy a kilo of carrots and would receive a cucumber as yapa or you would buy a sweater and receive a small doll. I think it is a great custom. I'm trying to make it a tradition with me. I painted a barn in the same type area. The photo isn't great, It was under glass before I realized I hadn't taken a photo.

Jo: I'm sure the gift and the painting will be deeply appreciated. What a nice custom on your part.

Fishing guy, I always thought that custom is neat. Some of the people in the markets in South America would have so little, but always gave something. Sometimes if they didn't have change they would give a piece of hard candy. :)
