Food for Thought

We complain about paying taxes. Joanna put a link to this article to think about. Exxon has a $30 billion tax bill for 2007. Whew.

Even considering the tax paid, Exxon still made a profit of 10 billion ($10,000,000,000). Is someone overcharging for their products?

I think it is incredible that just the one company pays more taxes than the bottom half of private citizens. Thank goodness that someone pays so much, think how much higher ours would be.

When I buy a Diet Pepsi, I consider that I am paying $1.50 for a few ounces of cola that took hardly anything to make and distribute and I rarely complain. When I buy gasoline, I consider all that it took to get it out of the ground, made into usable energy, and distributed. Then I consider how much of the price of gasoline is taxes that I am paying to pave our roads, etc. I also consider how many people are employed to do all of this and how expensive gasloline is in other countries (and has been for a long time). Then I don't think we pay too much and I don't worry about what oil companies profit. And if it does bother you that oil companies make too much money, try moving to a communist country where they monitor such stuff. Why don't we complain about how much movie-makers, Hollywood stars, writer, etc. profit?

I think Jo's link is very interesting and well worth considering.

bag blog, so true. We lived overseas and saw the high prices on gasoline. Diet Pepsi doesn't compare to bottled water! Besides the price, there is the pollution of the empties tossed onto the side of the road.

But that is another story....:)
