Sketch at Elephant Butte

Here is my pen sketch. About 15 minutes yesterday while visiting with Gen. Micron 05 in my generic sketchbook. The sketchbook is not sturdy, by the way. The Canson has held up very well and the generic wire holder is loosening and not holding as well when I fold it back to sketch. I'm pretty sure it cost about half what the Canson cost and for practice it isn't bad, but if you care to save your sketchbooks forever, it would be worth the difference to get the Canson. They look the same, except the Canson has a logo imbedded in the cover. The paper is better as well.

Just being out and sketching or painting opens your eyes to color, shadows and the beauty of our world. Truth or Consequences is far from the garden spot of the world, but the dam was built in 1916 and facilities were built back in the thirties and the terraces and big cut stones are just amazing. We need to really support our park services and help maintain these wonderful spots.

Thank you. After you read my demo on the apples it may give us a hint why I find watercolor so difficult. In watercolor you have to have a plan and stick with it for the most part. You can change things, but you work from light to dark and in the other media you work from dark to light and can cover most darks with an opaque light. In watercolor you can use guache but with too much of it, you loose the watercolor transparency and end up with an opaque painting. It is fascinating and I continue to pursue it once in a while.

Jo - getting a really good sketchbook (especially one which lies flat) makes such a difference to the enjoyment of sketching. I sear by my Moleskine now and it goes most places with me.

I was at Elephant Butte in July this year and it is a truly remarkable place - and more could not agree more about the importance of supporting the parks services. Your comment about Truth and Consequences made me giggle. You can see what I got up to here http://travelsketch.blogspot.com/2006/08/19th-july-chilis-and-big-elephant-butt.html

Ahh, you, too, saw the garden spot. You also saw New Mexico at its greenest, I do believe. Wettest summer in ages. I have tried to read about your travels, but missed this .. can't imagine how with the name and all. I'm enjoying your trip .. after the fact.

We live only a state away, although it is 730 miles to our hometown of Magdalena, and I miss the food and sunshine immediately upon crossing the state line.
